Planning a Trip to Málaga

Málaga's year has two halves that matter to a visitor: a warm dry summer from June to September, when the average high is above 26°C, July and August reach 29°C and each sees about one rainy day, and a mild wet winter from November to February, when highs still sit at 15 to 16°C but rain days run to seven or eight a month. The months in between are the argument: April at 19.6°C and seven rain days, May at 22.6°C and four and a half, October at 22.7°C and six. The beaches are staffed from 15 June, and at weekends before that.

The museums' free Sunday hours run all year. And the crowds, which no official body counts, follow the school holidays. This guide's reading is April, May and October, and the case is made in full on when to visit.

Three dates change the city more than the weather does. Semana Santa, 29 March to 5 April in 2026, fills the old town with processions and the hotels with Spain. Feria, 15 to 22 August 2026, closes the daytime fair in the centre at 18:00 and moves the night to Cortijo de Torres.

And the Christmas lights on Calle Larios, switched on 28 November in 2025 with shows at 18:30, 20:30 and 22:00 until 4 January, draw the region every evening. The 2027 Semana Santa and Feria dates are not yet published. The events calendar has all of them with the local holidays, 19 August and 8 September, on which the Museo de Málaga still opens.

The airport has a Cercanías station in the terminal: the C1 reaches María Zambrano in about eight minutes and Centro-Alameda in twelve, and the single fare for one or two zones is $2.10 (€1.80), paid at the gates with a contactless card under the Cronos system, validating in and out or paying the maximum. The Express bus, Line A, is $4.66 (€4) with luggage free, paid on board by card or cash, from Floor 0 of Arrivals. A taxi from the rank at Arrivals runs on the meter with an airport-origin minimum of $21.30 (€18.24) on the daytime tariff, $26.20 (€22.48) at night and $30.10 (€25.80) on the holiday tariff.

The city's 2025 guide sheet puts the 11 km ride to the centre at about $19.81 to $29.10 (€17 to €25), and a suitcase adds $0.68 (€0.58). The one figure AENA does not print is the C1's first and last train, which the airport page says so and shows where to read.

From Madrid the high-speed line reopened on 30 April 2026 after storm damage, with about 25 Renfe services a day in both directions, Iryo at 2 h 52 and Ouigo at about 2 h 56 with an advertised low fare of $10.49 (€9). Renfe's own fastest time and fare are not printed. The station page has the operators, the Avant to Granada and the Cercanías lines, and the cruise port page has the terminals and what fits in a call.

The Caminito del Rey is closed every Monday, admits groups every ten minutes from 09:00 with the last slot at 14:50 or 17:20 by season, and when we read its shop was selling dates only up to 6 December 2026. Tickets are nominative, must be personalised before download, admit no one under eight, and are lost without refund if you are late at the control cabin. The Alhambra's general ticket, $25.90 (€22.27), is nominative, checked against an original passport, admits you to the Nasrid Palaces only at the printed half-hour in groups of 300, and its online sale closes at 23:59 the day before.

No maximum advance window is printed. The Nerja cave is timed to the minute with no changes and no refunds. Everything in the city is easier: the Alcazaba sells at the gate and online, the Picasso Museum's ticket is a single $15.15 (€13) ladder with no slot rule printed, and La Concepción sells at the gate only.

The how far ahead to book guide takes each of these through the calendar, and the tickets hub puts the official price beside every reseller's on one page so the mark-up is visible before you pay it.

No tourist tax was found in the Junta de Andalucía's catalogue of taxes, which is an absence rather than a statement, so a hotel rate is the whole rate. Cards work at the metro gates, the Cercanías gates and the airport bus. The EMT bus takes cash and we could not verify contactless on it because the operator's site is blocked from outside Spain.

The tap water is soft, treated by reverse osmosis since 2006, and EMASA calls it as good as bottled and ideal for daily drinking at $0.002 a litre, so the bottle is a choice, not a need. The table is a museum day in the Centro at official prices. A Sunday afternoon cuts it to the price of the Cathedral, and the free things to do page lists what never costs anything.

Add a churro breakfast at $0.70 (€0.60) a churro, an espeto lunch whose price no chiringuito prints, and a room in the Centro's October band of $101.40 to $160.80 (€87 to €138), and the day is what where to stay and where to eat say it is. The Bono Arte Xperience, $19.23 (€16.50), bundles the Casa Natal, the Pompidou and the Russian collection for a week and is the only official multi-museum ticket. Whether the city sells a wider pass could not be read because its tourism portal was unreachable, so this guide prints neither that there is one nor that there is not.

Renfe publishes no static fare or timetable for any route this guide covers, so every train fare, from the C1's zones beyond the airport to the Avant to Granada, is marked booking engine only. The day trips hub prints the times that do exist. EMT Málaga's website is blocked from outside Spain, so its fares come from the Ayuntamiento's communiqué and its night-bus timetables are not stated.

The city's tourism portal refused every connection, which is why no verdict is printed on a city pass and why Calle Larios's pedestrianisation date and the Parque de Málaga's hours are not stated. Hammam Al Ándalus publishes no prices in readable form. The Cathedral's rooftop visits are suspended for works with no reopening date.

And the Blue Flag list on the beaches page is 2025's because 2026's could not be read. Each of those is a line on its own page, marked as a gap, and each will be re-read on the cadence printed in the footer.
