Nerja From Málaga

The figures below come from the Cueva de Nerja's own how-to-get-here page, which names the Alsa stops and gives the road distance, from the operators' listings on this site, and from Alsa's route pages, every one of which returned 404. Where a cell says not stated, the operator does not publish the figure on any page we could read.

The Alsa bus and its two Nerja stops

Alsa is the only scheduled operator between Málaga and Nerja, and the useful thing to know is not the fare, which it does not publish, but the stops. The town stop is on Avenida del Mediterráneo near the Hotel Riu Mónica, opposite the hostal Marazul, per the cave's description of the road-train stop that shares it. Some services continue to a stop called Nerja (Cuevas), which is at the cave itself in Maro.

The cave's how-to-get-here page tells you to choose Málaga as origin and Nerja (Cuevas) as destination in the Alsa engine, and in a reply to a reader dated 2 April 2024 says that bus takes you directly to the cave. The distinction matters because the cave is three kilometres from town and the road train that used to link them is suspended. Alsa's public route pages for Málaga to Nerja all return 404 on alsa.es and alsa.com, so the journey time, the fare, the first departure and the last return exist only in the booking engine on the day.

The coach listings on this site quote more than 47 services a day with a first bus at 06:30 arriving 08:00 and a last bus at 23:05 arriving 01:00, and that is printed here as the operators' claim rather than Alsa's. Where the bus leaves from in Málaga is on the getting around page.

From Málaga airport

Searchers ask for a bus from Málaga airport to Nerja, and no official page read for this guide describes one. The route the sources support is the airport to the city first, covered on the airport to city page, and then the Alsa bus from the bus station. Avanza's airport fare sheet lists the western coast, Marbella among it, and not Nerja, which is on the eastern side and served by Alsa.

The two operators do not overlap on this run.

Taxi and ride-hailing

Two of the four questions Google attaches to this keyword ask what a taxi or an Uber costs from Málaga to Nerja. The one official figure is on the Ayuntamiento's taxi guide sheet, on the 2025 tariff, which puts the airport to Nerja at €99 to €113 depending on the tariff band. No official fare from the city centre and no Uber figure was found, and this page does not print one from a blog.

What the official sources give is the road: about 58 km and about 48 minutes from Málaga to the cave on the A-7, from the cave's own site. Anyone pricing a taxi should ask the rank for the fixed interurban fare before getting in. The safety and scams page covers how metered fares work in Málaga.

The coach loops

Every coach that goes to Nerja goes to the cave and to Frigiliana as well, which is why the Nerja stop on all of them is the short one. The full-day loop from central Málaga does Frigiliana first, then an 80-minute cave slot with a physical audioguide, then two hours in Nerja, and includes the cave museum and VR room. Sandals are banned inside the cave.

The pickup version at the same price starts along the western resorts with 15 stops from Puerto Marina and Torremolinos Centro to Bil-Bil, adds a sweet-wine tasting in Frigiliana, gives 50 minutes in the cave and 90 minutes in Nerja, and its reviewers say Nerja feels short. Neither loop gives you a swim. For that, come on the bus with a towel, or take the Maro cliffs walk, which is a different day entirely: a van from central Málaga, a group capped at eight, a guided descent past a sixteenth-century watchtower to a beach the operator says you cannot reach without knowing the path, and snorkelling with supplied masks.

The operator warns in capitals of steep, loose sections, reviewers call the climb harder than expected, and sports shoes are compulsory.

The Balcón de Europa

The Balcón de Europa is the promenade on the headland at the centre of Nerja, a public viewpoint open at any hour with no charge stated, and the reason the coach loops park where they do. That is the whole of what this page can verify about it: the town's tourism portal, visita.nerja.es, sits behind a JavaScript CAPTCHA that returned an error on every attempt, so the official description, the history of the name and the facts about the church beside it are not printed here. Its position is on the map below, on Wikidata as a separate item from the town, and the Alsa stop on Avenida del Mediterráneo is a walk away whose distance no official page states.

Playa de Burriana and Playa de Calahonda

Burriana is the beach searchers name and the one east of the headland. Calahonda is the small cove directly below the Balcón. Both are free and both are public.

Their length, their flag status and their services are not stated on any page this guide could read, for the same CAPTCHA reason, and this page does not fill the gap with numbers from elsewhere. What the coach listings add is timing: 90 minutes to two hours in Nerja is not enough for a swim and lunch, which is the strongest argument for the bus over the loop if the sea is the point. The beaches within the city, with the facts their own council does publish, are on the beaches hub and the Pedregalejo page.

The cave, three kilometres away

The Cueva de Nerja is not in Nerja. It is in Maro, the hamlet three kilometres east, at 158 metres above sea level and 4,823 metres long, and it has its own page on this site because it is the one timed ticket on this coast. Two facts belong here because they change the Nerja day: the Alsa stop for it is Nerja (Cuevas), not Nerja, and the Cueva-Tren road train that ran between the town stop, Maro and the cave is marked on the cave's own site as currently not available.

So a bus day that wants both town and cave is two bus legs, or a walk of three kilometres, and the loops on the tickets table exist to solve exactly that. The ticket, the 2026 hours and the 458 steps are on the Nerja Caves page.

Frigiliana, six kilometres up the hill

The white village above Nerja is reached by a bus that changed operator in August 2026, and every older guide naming Alsa for it is wrong: it is now Grupo Verano Azul, roughly hourly from the Nerja stop, with the full timetable and the last bus back printed on the Frigiliana page. No direct bus from Málaga to Frigiliana is published, so the public route is Alsa to Nerja and then the village bus, which is why the coach loops bundle the two. If you are choosing between an afternoon in Nerja and an afternoon in Frigiliana, the bus timetable decides: the last Frigiliana to Nerja bus on a weekday is 21:00, or 22:00 from 1 July to 14 September, and your Alsa bus back to Málaga has to be found in the booking engine.

The ayuntamiento's site lists the OMAC citizen office at Calle Carmen 1, telephone (0034) 95 254 84 00, and that is a town-hall counter, not confirmed as the tourist office. The tourist office's own address and hours sit on the portal behind the CAPTCHA and are not printed. The Cueva de Nerja publishes proper hours, 09:15 to 16:30 with last entry 15:30 for most of the year and 09:15 to 17:30 with last entry 16:30 in June to September and the holiday periods, and those matter for a Nerja day because an afternoon Alsa arrival can miss the last cave entry.

Five things we could not confirm

Each of these was chased to an official page and stopped at a CAPTCHA, a 404 or a blank field, and each is printed so you know what to ask on the day.

- The Alsa fare, journey time, first departure and last return between Málaga and Nerja (alsa.es and alsa.com route pages, HTTP 404. Booking engine only). - The official description of the Balcón de Europa and any facts about Burriana or Calahonda (visita.nerja.es, HTTP 405 and a JavaScript CAPTCHA). - The tourist office's address and hours (same portal. Nerja.es gives only the OMAC counter). - A taxi or ride-hailing fare from the city centre (the Ayuntamiento's guide sheet gives only the airport to Nerja, €99 to €113, and no Uber figure exists on any official page). - Whether and when the Cueva-Tren road train will resume (cuevadenerja.es prints the suspension notice and no date).

Three ways to spend the day, with what each leaves out. The coach rows use the operators' listed durations. The bus row cannot carry a journey time because Alsa prints none.

If the sea is the point, the bus wins and the loop loses. If the cave is the point, the loop's fixed slot removes the risk of missing the last entry. The Nerja Caves page prices the second choice, and the Frigiliana page prints the village bus that decides the first.

Nerja is the sea day, and the shape of it depends on whether the cave is in it. Without the cave, take the first Alsa bus you can find in the booking engine, walk from the Avenida del Mediterráneo stop to the Balcón, swim at Burriana or Calahonda, and come back when you like. The fare is whatever Alsa charges that day and nothing in the town costs anything.

With the cave, either book the full-day loop and accept 90 minutes to two hours in town, or ride to Nerja (Cuevas) first for a morning slot and bus or walk the three kilometres back for the afternoon. Base yourself in the historic centre or La Malagueta for the bus station, and put this day on the two-day itinerary only if you are staying longer than two nights.
