Gibraltar From Málaga: the Rock, the Border and the Bus

Avanza runs the Costa del Sol corridor from the bus station on Paseo de los Tilos, next to María Zambrano, and several of its lines call at La Línea de la Concepción bus station, from which visitgibraltar.gi says the frontier is a five-minute walk. The ordinary fare is $19.33 (€16.59), with a Semidirecto at $19.91 (€17.09) and an Exprés at $23.30 (€20), and the journey runs from 1 h 55 on the fastest run to 2 h 45 on the stopping ones. Departures from Málaga with a La Línea stop are 06:30, 08:20, 09:50, 11:30, 13:00, 14:15, 15:35, 17:30 and 21:10.

Returns from La Línea run 07:35, 09:45, 11:10, 12:35, 13:40, 15:25, 16:30, 18:10, 19:45 and 20:30, the last arriving in Málaga at 23:40. Tickets are sold at windows 14 and 15 in the station. The one trap in the PDF is line L-308, the Directo to Algeciras, which does not stop at La Línea at all.

Crossing the Frontier and the Runway

The land frontier is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with no charge to enter Gibraltar and no limit on the number of crossings, and visitgibraltar.gi says you will be required to hold a valid passport. The sentence about EU identity cards that appears in search snippets was not in the page text read, so this page does not confirm ID-card entry. Once through, pedestrians cross the airport runway on foot along a marked lane.

If the lights turn red as you approach, you wait at the barrier until the aircraft has passed. Closure durations and the tunnel alternative are not on the page read. From the runway, Casemates Square and Main Street are the town, and the Upper Rock is above.

New travel arrangements under the UK–EU Agreement in respect of Gibraltar were, in visitgibraltar.gi's words, due to come into effect from 15 July 2026. Under them people can move between Gibraltar and Spain without routine passport checks at the land frontier, and travellers should still carry valid travel documentation and comply with any checks required by the relevant authorities. The Government's statement of 22 July says the treaty maintains immigration and security controls while facilitating movement, and adds a hard line for visa nationals: a person who requires a visa but does not hold it on arrival will not be permitted to enter Gibraltar, and a Schengen visa alone is not that visa.

The technical notice on the Schengen Entry/Exit System says the Spanish authorities will presently not apply the EES at this border and that it is intended the EES will not apply here now or in the future. What no page states is whether Spain still exit-stamps third-country passports after 15 July, so carry the passport and expect either outcome.

The adult ticket for ages 11 and over is $40.70 (£30), the child ticket for ages 5 to 11 is $29.80 (£22), and infants of 0 to 4 are free. Proof of age is required at entry, and the ticket is valid for the full day of your visit. It covers St Michael's Cave with its light show every twenty minutes, the Great Siege Tunnels, the WWII Tunnels, the Skywalk at 340 metres above the sea, the Windsor Suspension Bridge across a 50-metre gorge, the Apes' Den, the Moorish Castle and the trails.

From 1 October to 30 April the reserve opens at 09:00 with last ticket sales at 17:15, last entry 17:45 and closing 18:15. From 1 May to 30 September it opens at 09:30 with last sales at 18:15, last entry 18:45 and closing 19:15. It is closed on 25 December and 1 January and shuts at 15:30 on 24 and 31 December.

The Great Siege Tunnels carry a warning that the steep incline is not recommended for limited mobility, and the Skywalk admits fifty people at a time.

What the Cable Car Closure Changes

The cable car is the way most guides still describe the Rock, and naturereserve.gi says plainly that it is undergoing full refurbishment and is expected to reopen in 2027. The operator's own domain did not resolve when checked. The tours and third-party passes still advertise it.

Without it the Upper Rock is a climb, a $54.30 (£40) shuttle that already includes the $40.70 ticket, so the bus itself costs $13.60, or a taxi Rock Tour whose price sits outside every official page. The optional Rock Tour coach is the one tour that folds a minibus loop into the booking. On every other coach you decide at the frontier, and the taxi rank is busiest at the 11:00 arrival the coaches share.

The variable is the way up. On foot the Upper Rock takes the middle of the day. By shuttle or taxi it takes ninety minutes to two hours and leaves time for Main Street.

Whatever you choose, the reserve's last entry at 17:45 or 18:45 is the hard edge, and the 20:30 bus from La Línea is the soft one.

- The reserve ticket costs the same whether you climb, ride the shuttle or take a taxi. The $54.30 (£40) shuttle fare already contains the $40.70 (£30) ticket, and the cable car's printed £49 return is £30 admission plus a £19 add-on, presented two ways on one site [naturereserve.gi/tickets. Naturereserve.gi/faq]. - Line L-308 does not stop at La Línea. It is the Directo to Algeciras, and it shares the timetable PDF with the lines that do. The 06:30 L-325 is the first bus that stops [Avanza Málaga LR timetable, 26 June 2026]. - Feeding the macaques is illegal, and the fine is not published. The Apes' Den page says so in as many words. Gibraltar is the day for a passport and a pair of shoes rather than a ticket bought weeks ahead: nothing on the Rock sells out, the frontier never closes, and the coaches run daily. Put it after Granada, whose Alhambra slot has to be fixed first, and keep it away from the Caminito del Rey, which needs the same early start. If Morocco is on the list, Tangier uses the same Avanza corridor as far as Algeciras and a very different border.
