Centre Pompidou Málaga

El Cubo and Daniel Buren, 2013 to 2015

The Centre Pompidou's page states that the Málaga branch opened its doors on 28 March 2015 in the presence of Spanish and French government officials, in a 6,000-square-metre venue called El Cubo with a glass cube originally built in 2013 and redesigned by the French artist Daniel Buren in 2014. The cube is the coloured box you see from the quay. The galleries are underground, which surprises visitors who expect the building to be the size of the cube.

The semi-permanent exhibition occupies 1,800 square metres of it. The first hang, from 2015 to 2017, was built on five themes the Paris page still lists: metamorphoses, the body fragmented, the body politic, self-portraits and the man with no face.

The Agreement: Five Years, Five More, Then Ten

The original partnership between the City of Málaga and the Centre Pompidou was signed in September 2014 for five years, extended in March 2020 for a further five, and extended again in March 2025 for a ten-year term, which carries the branch to 2035. The Málaga site's 'nosotros' page records the February 2018 announcement of the first extension and puts the visitor count at more than 850,000 since opening. On the Málaga side the museum is run by the Agencia Pública para la Gestión de la Casa Natal de Pablo Ruiz Picasso y Otros Equipamientos Museísticos y Culturales, the Ayuntamiento body that also manages the Casa Natal, the Russian Museum Collection and MEET, which is why the four share a tariff structure and a 16:00 free-Sunday rule.

'To Open Eyes', 3 July 2025 to 17 January 2027

The current semi-permanent hang draws on the Musée National d'Art Moderne's collection and is arranged in six paired themes rather than by date: Iconos / Signos, Cuerpos / Colores, Gestos / Huellas, Espiritualidades / Sincretismos, Ficciones / Proyecciones and Espacios / Revelaciones. The artists the museum names run from the Bauhaus and the readymade to the present: Josef Albers, Marcel Breuer, Paul Klee, László Moholy-Nagy, Marcel Duchamp, Piero Manzoni, Robert Ryman, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Vera Molnár, Julie Mehretu, Judy Chicago, Joan Jonas, Sarah Lucas, Jackson Pollock and Marina Abramović among them. The museum publishes no work count for it on the page we read.

Two practical consequences: the thematic order means the free audio guide is worth using, and because the rooms are underground there is no natural light, so the cube above is the only part of the visit that is about the port.

The Young Public Space and the Intervention

Two smaller spaces sit inside the $10.49 (€9) ticket and outside the $8.16 (€7) one. 'La Casa Mágica + Juego de volúmenes', 20 February 2026 to February 2027, is the Espacio Joven Público installation by Adrien Rovero and Émilie Queney on spatial volumes, built for children and the reason this is the museum on the Málaga with kids page. 'El intérprete', 4 March 2026 to March 2027, is a site-specific intervention by the Málaga artist Imon Boy.

The Cube Itself

Buren's glass is the one part of the museum that is free to look at from outside, and it photographs best in the last hour of light from the quay side with the water behind it. Inside, the cube is the skylight over the entrance stair. The galleries run beneath the quay.

Lockers are on floor 0, the audio guide is free in Spanish, English, French, German, Italian and Russian, and the building has ramps, lifts, adapted toilets and wheelchairs on loan.

The Centre Pompidou Málaga opens from 09:30 to 20:00 on Monday and from Wednesday to Sunday, closes every Tuesday, and closes on 25 December and 1 January. On 24 and 31 December it shuts at 15:00 with last entry at 14:30. Entry is free for everyone on Sundays from 16:00 until closing, in the museum's own words 'los domingos a partir de las 16:00 horas y hasta la hora de cierre', and free every day for under-18s, the unemployed, visitors with a disability, art-history teachers and students, museum staff, ICOM members, accredited guides and the press.

The reduced fare covers over-65s, students up to 26 and large families.

The Quiet Slots

Our observation, not a museum figure: the emptiest hour is 09:30 on a Wednesday or Thursday, the fullest paid hours are cruise mornings, when the terminal ten minutes away lands its passengers on the quay between 09:00 and 11:00, and the free Sunday window is the fullest of all. The cruise port page lists the ship calls. A day with two or more ships alongside is a day to come after 15:00.

The museum's address puts it on Muelle Uno, the redeveloped quay of the Puerto de Málaga whose own site prints shop hours of 10:00 to 22:00 and minimum restaurant hours of 12:00 to midnight, with no closed days stated. West along the quay is the Palmeral de las Sorpresas, the palm-lined promenade toward the city, and south at the end of the mole is La Farola, the working lighthouse that is not open to visitors on any official page we read. Across the road north is the Parque de Málaga, the three parallel walkways that lead in fifteen minutes to the Cathedral.

East across the harbour mouth is La Malagueta beach and the bullring where Picasso was taken as a boy. The quay is the reason to pair the museum with an evening rather than a morning: the hang closes at 20:00, the restaurants do not, and the cube is lit. Photography and dog rules are not printed on the pages we read. For families the young public space is the draw, and under-18s enter free, so a parent pays $10.49 (€9) for a household. The museum runs a mediation programme of workshops and screenings on the events page.

Its second Festival de Artes Vivas ran across the Ayuntamiento's museums in 2026.

The address is Pasaje Doctor Carrillo Casaux s/n, Muelle Uno, Puerto de Málaga, 29016. From the cruise terminal it is a ten-minute walk along the quay. From the Cathedral fifteen minutes south through the Parque de Málaga.

From María Zambrano station about 30 minutes on foot or an EMT bus to the Paseo del Parque stops at $1.63 (€1.40) a single, with the last five minutes on foot across the road to the quay. The cube is visible from the park side, so navigation is by eye. Muelle Uno has its own car park with a tariff page we did not fetch. getting around Málaga has the rest.

Take it late: the museum stays open to 20:00, the quay's restaurants open at noon and run past midnight, and the cube is lit after dark, so a 17:30 visit that ends on Muelle Uno is the natural close to a day that began at the Alcazaba and the Picasso Museum. On a Sunday it is free from 16:00 and the Alcazaba from 14:00. Cruise passengers do it in reverse, the cube first at 09:30 before the centre.
