The shop is at caminitodelrey.info under Tickets, and it sells six things. The general ticket at $11.65 (€10) is entry to the controlled section with a helmet, nothing else. The official guided visit at $21.00 (€18) adds a certified guide, radio headsets and a group capped at thirty people, in Spanish and English, meeting at the ticket office at the north access and finishing with the shuttle back to the reception centre.

The shuttle at $2.91 (€2.50) per person is a single ticket valid for unlimited rides in both directions that day, added at checkout or paid in cash on the bus. Parking at $2.33 (€2) a day is at the Centro de Recepción de Visitantes and can be reserved with the ticket. A package at $33.80 (€29) bundles the general ticket with a visit and tasting at the Cervezas Gaitanejo brewery in Ardales and is sold by the brewery.

And there is a reduced-price line missing: the shop lists no child, senior, student or EU category at all.

Buying needs an account. You log in, choose a date and a ten-minute slot from 09:00, and buy up to ten tickets per order. Each ticket must then be personalised in your profile with the walker's name before it can be downloaded, and it is valid for that date only. Tickets on the Day and Last Minute

There is no ticket office selling walk-up entries at the cabin. The shop is online and every ticket is date-specific and named. A same-day purchase is possible only if the online calendar still shows a slot for today, and the operator does not say whether it ever releases returns.

For a last-minute trip the realistic sequence is: check the official calendar first, then the tour cards on this page, then give up and go to El Torcal, which needs no ticket at all.

The three variables that separate the coach tours are the transport pattern, who the guide is, and what is in the bag. A direct coach to the north access with the bus waiting at the El Chorro exit is the cleanest day. A coach with Costa del Sol pickups is longer on the road.

An official Caminito guide is the same certified guide the operator's own $21.00 visit uses. A tour leader handles logistics and does not commentate on the walkway, which the all-included listing is honest about. And the bag: a helmet comes with every entry, water is sometimes included, food almost never.

Two Clauses Worth Reading Before You Pay

Insurance and age. Two listings, the welcome-pack tour and the Álora day, state that over-65s must bring their own insurance and sign a form, and the afternoon operator covers walkers only to 65. And cancellation for heat: the afternoon operator says it may cancel for high temperatures and is not obliged to refund, while the Costa del Sol listing and the early-slot coach promise money back if the route closes.

The tours win in four cases. Availability: they hold their own allocation, so a grey official calendar is not the end. Cancellation: the official ticket is final, the tours cancel free to 24 hours before, and if your Málaga dates are not fixed that alone is worth the difference. Logistics: no train timetable from 2023 to decode, no cash for the shuttle, no 8 km gap between the station and the entrance to think about. And the guide: the official guided visit at $21.00 is the cheaper way to have one, but it starts at the north access, so only the drivers and the train-and-shuttle crowd can reach it.

One phrase to decode. Listings that say skip the line are accurate in that you do not stand at a ticket desk, because there is no ticket desk. Every walker enters at a timed slot. There is no such thing as a skip-the-line Caminito ticket, and the early-slot coach's first-pass tickets are the first slots of the day, not a separate queue.

• Go back into your profile and personalise every ticket with the walker's name, then download. An unpersonalised ticket does not download.

Before You Press Pay

The slot cannot be moved and the ticket cannot be refunded once bought unless the operator closes the route. Names are checked against original ID at the cabin, so a ticket bought in one person's name for another walker is a wasted $11.65. From the Costa del Sol the coach with coastal pickups at $80.27 is the only listing here that collects outside the city. Everyone else meets in central Málaga, which from Torremolinos or Fuengirola means the Cercanías C-1 first. From Granada there is no direct public route to the gorge.

The Caminito is one of four things around Málaga that sell a binding time slot with a name on it.
