Tangier From Málaga: the Ferry, the Bus and the Border in a Day

No ferry sails from Málaga to Morocco, and no operator page suggests one. The searches for it come from aggregators that sell the Algeciras crossing under Málaga's name. The Tarifa to Tangier Ville route, the fast crossing into the city port that every pre-2025 day trip was built on, was FRS's, and FRS was absorbed by DFDS.

DFDS's own page for the route now says that the final departure was on Sunday 4 May 2025 and points to Tanger Med and Algeciras instead, and frs.es redirects to dfds.com. What remains is Algeciras to Tanger Med, which DFDS prints as 1 hour and 30 minutes with at least eleven crossings a day and a usual timetable from Algeciras of 03:15, 06:00, 09:15, 12:00, 15:15, 18:00, 21:15 and 23:59. Arrival times on that page are in Moroccan time, which is why a 12:00 departure reads as a 12:30 arrival: it is a ninety-minute crossing across a one-hour clock change, not a half-hour one.

DFDS asks you to be at the port at least 90 minutes before departure. The Tanger Med port asks pedestrians and vehicles for Algeciras to arrive two hours before the return sailing. Fares are not stated anywhere outside the booking engine, and the page says prices are subject to availability.

Passports are stamped on board during the crossing, and Moroccan customs at Tanger Med wants the passport and the boarding card.

Tanger Med Is Not Tangier

The port's own passenger pages give the distances: 54 km to Tanger Ouest, about 30 minutes. 35 km to Tanger Est, about 20 minutes. 18 km to Fnideq, about 15 minutes. From the maritime station there is an urban bus run by ALSA to Tangier Ville railway station, and there are taxis. Neither fare is printed.

The private tours exist largely because of this leg: a driver waiting at Tanger Med turns a port on an industrial coast into a city arrival, and a driver waiting in the medina at the end of the afternoon turns the two-hour return check-in into somebody else's calculation.

Avanza's L-308 Directo leaves Málaga bus station on Paseo de los Tilos at 06:55 and reaches Algeciras at 08:40, 1 h 45 on the road. The stopping lines through La Línea take two to three hours. The ordinary fare is $21.30 (€18.28), the Directo $21.90 (€18.76), the Exprés $25.60 (€22).

Tickets are sold at windows 14 and 15. The last returns are 19:30 on the Directo, arriving Málaga 21:15, 21:35 on L-602 arriving 23:50, and 22:15 on L-530 arriving 00:15. A Málaga to Tarifa fare of $25.20 (€21.62) is printed on the sheet but the long-distance timetable has no Tarifa column, and Comes, which serves Algeciras to Tarifa, publishes its times and fares only through a booking form.

With the Tarifa ferry gone, Tarifa is no longer part of this day anyway. The walking distance from Algeciras bus station to the ferry port is not printed on any Avanza page.

The Earliest Realistic Independent Day

Bus at 06:55, Algeciras at 08:40. The 90-minute check-in rules out the 09:15 sailing, so the first ferry you can board is the 12:00, which arrives at 12:30 Moroccan time, 13:30 on your Spanish watch. Add twenty to thirty minutes into the city and you are in the medina in the early afternoon.

Coming back, the two-hour check-in at Tanger Med means leaving Tangier three hours before your sailing, and the last bus out of Algeciras is 22:15. Return sailing times from Tanger Med are not printed on the DFDS page read, which is the last gap in the arithmetic, and the reason this page will not promise how many hours you get in Tangier: on the official figures it is three to four, and it depends on a sailing this site could not read.

The need for a visa depends on your nationality, and Morocco runs an e-visa and an electronic travel authorisation, the AEVM, through its Acces Maroc portal. The tourist office does not print the visa-exempt list, and the two consular sites that would were unreachable, so check your own nationality on the portal before booking. For every nationality the maximum tourist stay is 90 days.

Passports are stamped on board during the crossing. Customs at Tanger Med asks for the passport and the boarding card, and a minor travelling with someone other than a parent needs a parental authorisation. The currency is the Moroccan dirham, MAD, in notes of 20, 50, 100 and 200 and coins from 0.50 to 10, and exchange offices require your passport for the transaction.

The clock is the trap that catches day-trippers: Morocco is on GMT+1 and drops to GMT during Ramadan, so in summer Tangier is one hour behind Málaga and in Ramadan two hours behind. Every ferry time printed in Morocco is Moroccan time, and the two-hour return check-in is counted in it.

The variable is who meets the ferry. On your own, the port road and the return check-in eat the day. With a driver on the Moroccan shore, the same crossing gives you the kasbah, Cap Spartel and the Hercules Caves in the hours the bus traveller spends in a taxi queue.

Tangier is the trip to take last and with the most margin: it needs a passport, possibly a visa checked on the Moroccan portal, a ferry timetable DFDS says can change in high season, and a clock that runs an hour or two behind. Fix Granada first for its Alhambra slot, keep Córdoba and Seville as the flexible train days, and give Tangier a full day with no evening plan in Málaga.
