Málaga to Seville: the Alcázar, the Cathedral and the Train

The train is the default and the least documented. Renfe's Málaga–Sevilla route page lists the service under AVE or Larga Distancia, gives the first departure from María Zambrano as 06:37 and the first return from Santa Justa as 06:50, and prints neither the journey time nor a fare. A separate Renfe notice confirms that Avant trains also run Sevilla–Málaga and that their times were lightly adjusted from 14 December of an unprinted year.

Whatever the booking engine shows you on the day is the only current figure, and the same engine is where the price lives. Both stations keep long hours, Santa Justa 04:30 to 00:30 and María Zambrano 05:00 to 00:45, and the ticket includes a free Cercanías connection at the Málaga end. From Santa Justa to the Alcázar no official page prints a transit route.

The Alcázar's own page only says entry is through the Puerta del Apeadero on the Patio de Banderas.

Why the Coaches Take Three Hours Where the Train Takes Less

The optional-tickets trip describes three hours each way by coach with a panoramic drive on arrival, and the ten-hour listings agree. The train is faster on the same corridor but starts and ends at Santa Justa, which is not in the monument quarter. What the coach buys is the door: Puerta de Jerez is a few minutes on foot from the Cathedral, and the tours' guided walk through the Barrio de Santa Cruz ends at the monuments.

What the train buys is the early start and the return time you choose. If you want the Alcázar before the coaches arrive, the 06:37 is the only way to be at the Patio de Banderas window for 09:00.

The general ticket covers the ground floor of the palaces and the gardens. The Cuarto Real Alto, the royal apartments upstairs, is a separate timed supplement at $6.41 (€5.50). Reduced entry at $9.32 (€8) goes to people over 65, students aged 14 to 30 inclusive and European Youth Card holders in the same age band.

Free entry is for children up to 13 with an adult, people born in or resident in the municipality of Seville, visitors with a disability over 33 percent plus one companion, registered unemployed of Seville province and ICOMOS members, all with proof. Tickets are sold at the Patio de Banderas window from 09:00, card only, or online. They admit no refund except through the Patronato's own fault, and a partial closure inside the complex earns no discount.

The Free Monday That Is Not a Walk-Up

The official shop lists a product called Lunes Gratuito Visita Real Alcázar. On in Q3 2026 it showed as sold out, and neither the shop front nor the Patronato's pages print the hours it applies to. That makes it a reservation you might win, not a door you can turn up at, and this page will not describe it as a free afternoon.

The Patronato also prints no timed-entry policy for the general ticket and no advance-sale window, so the practical rule for a day-tripper is simpler than the Alhambra's: buy online the night before or walk to the window at 09:00, and expect the window queue to grow after the coaches arrive. Time needed is not stated anywhere official. The Alcázar tour allots 90 minutes with a guide.

General entry is $15.15 (€13) online and $16.31 (€14) at the window, reduced $8.16 (€7) and $9.32 (€8) for over-65s, students up to 25, disability between 33 and 65 percent and large-family adults. Free entry goes to children up to 13 with an adult, people born in or resident in the diocese, disability of 65 percent or more and registered unemployed, all with official proof. The audioguide is $5.83 (€5) and the app $4.66 (€4).

Guided visits are $23.30 (€20) online or $24.50 (€21) at the window, and online bookings of guided products carry a $1.17 (€1) fee per ticket, which is worth knowing because it eats the online discount on that product only. The ticket includes the Giralda, where the visit starts with its own access control, and free entry to the Iglesia de El Salvador. The Cabildo estimates the visit at 75 minutes.

The Free Sunday Visit, and Why It Rarely Suits a Day Trip

The public visit is free on Sundays that are not holidays, from 16:30 to 18:00, by prior online reservation and with limited capacity. From Málaga that means a Sunday day trip whose one certain monument opens at 14:30 and closes its tower at 17:00, with the free slot starting after the Alcázar has shut in winter. It works for a visitor sleeping in Seville.

For a train day it is a reason to go on a weekday and pay $15.15. Note the door: online tickets use the Puerta del Lagarto, window tickets the Puerta del Príncipe.

The day divides at the Alcázar window. On the 06:37 train you can be first through the Puerta del Apeadero. On a coach you arrive when the queue has formed, which is exactly what the Alcázar-inclusive tour is selling around.

- The Alcázar's free Monday is a shop product, not a door. Alcazarsevilla.org prepara-la-visita]. - The Cathedral is $1.17 (€1) cheaper online, but guided products add a €1 booking fee. General entry is €13 online against €14 at the window. Accesses and the tower shut at 17:00 in standard hours and 18:00 after the clock change, so a 17:30 arrival buys the nave and not the view [catedraldesevilla.es horarios-y-tarifas]. - The Cathedral ticket includes a second church. Entry to the Iglesia de El Salvador comes with it, a few streets north, which most day-trippers never claim [catedraldesevilla.es horarios-y-tarifas]. - The Alcázar gives no discount for a closed room. The rules page states that partial closures earn no reduction and that tickets admit no refund, so check the shop's notices before paying for the Cuarto Real Alto [alcazarsevilla.org normativa-uso-real-alcazar].

Seville is the flexible day: it needs no named ticket, its monuments sell at the door, and the train starts early enough to give you both before the coaches arrive. Put it after Granada, whose Alhambra slot is the thing to fix first, and before or instead of Córdoba, which shares the same rail corridor and the same kind of walk-up ticket. If the Caminito del Rey is on the list, keep it on a separate day.

Its timed, named ticket and its train to El Chorro cannot be combined with Seville.
