Muelle Uno and the Port of Málaga

2011: the port opens two piers to the city

Until 2011 the port of Málaga was a fenced working harbour between the old town and the sea, and the Parque de Málaga was where the city stopped. That year the Port Authority opened two piers to the public: Pier 1, Muelle Uno, with shops, restaurants, two car parks and the site that became the Centre Pompidou Málaga. And Pier 2, the Palmeral de las Sorpresas, a palm-lined promenade with the maritime station for smaller cruise ships and the Alborania museum. The operator, Muelle Uno Puerto de Málaga S.A., runs the shops and the car parks. The quays themselves are the Port Authority's, Autoridad Portuaria de Málaga, at Muelle de Cánovas s/n.

The result is an L: the Palmeral runs east along the water from the foot of the park, Muelle Uno turns south along the eastern arm of the harbour, and La Farola stands at the corner where the arm meets the beach.

The Pompidou cube, 2015

The coloured glass cube at the southern end of Muelle Uno is the skylight of the Centre Pompidou Málaga, which occupies the space below it. Its address is on this quay, Pasaje Doctor Carrillo Casaux s/n. It opens 09:30 to 20:00 every day except Tuesday, closes 25 December and 1 January and at 15:00 on 24 and 31 December, and charges $10.49 (€9) for both exhibitions, $8.16 (€7) for the permanent one alone, with free entry on Sundays from 16:00.

La Farola: a working lighthouse, not a visit

The white lighthouse at the corner of the pier is La Farola, and it is still a working light. No official page we could read publishes visiting hours for it, and none says it is open to the public. We treat it as closed.

The date of 1817 that every guidebook gives comes only from the city's tourism portal, which we could not fetch, so we do not print it as fact. What you can do is walk round its base to the start of La Malagueta beach, where the lifeguard season runs 15 June to 15 September.

The operator's hours page prints three lines. Shops open 10:00 to 22:00. Restaurants open Monday to Sunday 12:00 to 00:00, and the page calls that the minimum, 'horario mínimo según restaurante', so any given restaurant may open earlier or close later. The management office works Monday to Friday 09:30 to 14:30 and 16:00 to 19:00. No seasonal variation is printed, no closed days, and no Sunday exception for the shops. Málaga is a declared zone of high tourist influx for all of Semana Santa and from 1 June to 30 September, when shop hours are free, and outside those windows the Junta's list of sixteen opening Sundays applies. The promenade itself has no gate and no hours. It is lit and walked all evening, and the restaurants keep it busy past midnight in summer. The nightlife page covers the terraces.

The car park is open 24 hours, seven days, with number-plate recognition, more than 30,000 square metres and electric chargers. The entrance is on Paseo de los Curas, the road between the park and the port. The tariff steps down the longer you stay, so a short stop is expensive per minute and a full day is not.

The worked examples are ours from the per-minute rates. The cap and the passes are the operator's figures. For a hire car dropped for a day in the old town this is the number to remember: $35.00 (€30) and no risk of a ticket.

Muelle Uno is lined with restaurants and the operator does not list them by name on the pages we read, so this guide names only the two with a citable source. José Carlos García, on Plaza de la Capilla at the quay, holds one Michelin star in the 2026 guide, two Repsol Soles, cooks two tasting menus only with no à la carte, and is priced by both guides at the top band, over €60 a head. Godoy, Marisquería Godoy at units 34 and 35 of the centre, holds one Repsol Sol and is priced by Repsol between €35 and €60 with menus at $40.80 (€35) and $75.70 (€65). It is the seafood room, and the one to book for a long lunch facing the water. Neither publishes hours we could cite from a fetched page.

The rest of the quay, the Angus steakhouse people search for, the chains, the ice-cream counters, is not named here because nothing citable names it. That is a rule of this site, not a judgement of the food. The where to eat page explains the rule and lists the city's Michelin and Repsol tables, and the espetos that Málaga is actually known for are grilled twenty minutes east along the beach, not on this quay.

The Port Authority's cruise page describes more than 1,300 linear metres of berth for cruise ships in two zones: the Levante zone with four berths and two terminals for ships of any size, and the Palmeral de las Sorpresas with one berth for smaller ships and a terminal in the port-city area. All three terminals are run by Cruceros Málaga. The last traffic figure the page prints is for 2019, 288 calls and 476,973 passengers, 31 per cent of them starting or ending their cruise here. The current-year tables are JavaScript and did not render, so we print no 2026 figure.

What matters to a passenger is that the Palmeral terminal puts you on the promenade itself, ten minutes from the Cathedral through the park, while the Levante terminals are further along the harbour arm. The Port Authority prints no walking distance and no shuttle information for them, which is the negative finding here. The taxi minimum from the Estación Marítima is $11.01 (€9.45) on the 2026 tariff. The variable is the museum. The walk is fixed by geography. The Pompidou adds ninety minutes on any day but Tuesday, and lunch at a listed table adds two hours to anything.

One adjustment: on a Sunday the Pompidou is free from 16:00, which turns the second routing into an afternoon rather than a morning and puts you on the quay at the hour the restaurants are fullest. The Sunday and Monday openings page sets that beside the museums' other free hours.

• The car park's daily cap is $35.00 (€30) and the first half hour is the most expensive band at €0.0706 a minute. A cruise passenger can buy seven days for $68.30 (€58.60) (muelleuno.com, parking page).
• Muelle Uno and the Palmeral de las Sorpresas both opened in 2011, Pier 1 and Pier 2 of a port that was closed to the public before that (Autoridad Portuaria de Málaga, port-city page).
• The Centre Pompidou's address is on this quay, Pasaje Doctor Carrillo Casaux s/n, and it is closed every Tuesday and free every Sunday from 16:00 (centrepompidou-malaga.eu, visit page).
• The port's last published cruise figure is 2019, 288 calls and 476,973 passengers, and its walking distance from the terminals to the centre is not stated anywhere on its site (puertomalaga.com, cruises page).
• La Farola is a working lighthouse with no published visiting hours, and the operator's own site does not mention it, the Palmeral or the Pompidou at all (muelleuno.com. Facts pack search in Q3 2026).

The operator prints no street address and no directions, only 'Puerto de Málaga' and a phone number, 952 003 942. In practice: from Plaza de la Marina at the bottom of Calle Larios cross Paseo de los Curas and you are on the Palmeral. Follow the palms east and turn south along the water for Muelle Uno. It is about ten minutes from the Cathedral, five from the Parque de Málaga's rose garden, and twenty from María Zambrano station on foot, or Metro line 1 to Atarazanas and a twelve-minute walk. EMT buses 1, 3, 11 and the C1 and C2 circulars stop on the Alameda and at Parque - Plaza de la Marina. The single fare is $1.63 (€1.40). The getting-around page has the lines.

By car, the entrance to the Muelle Uno car park is on Paseo de los Curas, with the tariff in the parking section above. By bicycle the promenade is flat and the bike tour rides it as its marina section.

It fits at the end of the afternoon, when the old town's museums close and the light comes off the water. The day that works walks down from the Alcazaba through the Parque de Málaga, takes the Pompidou at 17:00 with two hours in hand, and finishes with the evening on the quay, which is how the Málaga in two days itinerary places it. For a cruise passenger it is the first and last thing in the day, the route from the ship to the Cathedral and back, and the cruise port page builds the hours in between.

On a Sunday put it at 16:00, when the Pompidou is free and the Picasso Museum's free last two hours are a fifteen-minute walk away.
