How Far in Advance to Book the Caminito del Rey, the Alhambra and Málaga's Tickets, Season by Season

The Caminito is the only thing on this list that behaves like a concert. Every ticket is bought online with an account, personalised to a named walker, tied to one date and one ten-minute slot from 09:00, and lost if you miss it. The shop sells a fixed window: on in Q3 2026 it stated that tickets for dates after 6 December 2026 would go on sale later, with no date given, so the calendar you can buy into runs roughly three months ahead and then stops. When the next block opens is not announced.

What the operator does not say is how quickly a given week fills. Its FAQ answers the sold-out question by pointing at the booking platform. So the figure you will read elsewhere, four to six weeks, is somebody's experience rather than a rule, and the only rule you can act on is the window: if your trip is inside the next three months, buy now. If it is beyond 6 December, nothing can be bought yet, and the coach tours are the only channel holding seats that far out.

Two more facts decide the booking. The walk is closed on Mondays and on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January, so a four-day trip has at most three possible Caminito days. And the last slot is 14:50 in the shorter season and 17:20 in the longer one, with the season boundary unpublished. From Málaga by train the first reachable slot is about 10:40, which the Caminito del Rey page works through. The tickets page has the price grid and the tour allocations.

When the Date Is Grey

Each coach operator holds its own block of entries, which is why a guided day can show seats on a day the official calendar shows nothing. You pay $57 to $68 over the entry for a coach and a guide, and you get free cancellation to 24 hours before, which the official ticket never offers. In summer the early-slot coach and the afternoon tour in the shade are the two that also answer the heat.

The Alhambra's Visita Diurna General is $25.90 (€22.27), and the Patronato's own pages are explicit about everything except the thing people search for. The ticket is nominative, personal and non-transferable, the name cannot be changed once printed, and an original DNI or passport is checked at the gates. Entry to the Nasrid Palaces is at the time printed on the ticket and only then, with a capacity of 300 people per half hour. Miss it and you lose the palaces but keep the Alcazaba and the Generalife. Online sale for individuals closes at 23:59 the day before the visit, and every purchase is final.

On lead time the Patronato prints nothing: no maximum advance window, so the one-year figure in circulation is not on the official pages, and no sold-out statement, only a note that part of the capacity is held for institutional channels and that unused allocations are released back to general sale, which is why checking again on the day before sometimes works. Children under 12 are free but must have a ticket reserved at the moment of the adult purchase. Hours run 08:30 to 18:00 from 15 October to 31 March and 08:30 to 20:00 from 1 April to 14 October, closed 25 December and 1 January. Night visits to the palaces run Tuesday to Saturday in the long season and Friday and Saturday in the short one. The Granada page has the Avant train, 1 hour 10 minutes from Málaga, and the C30 bus to the hill.

Málaga's own big three publish no slot rules and no sell-out warnings, and their prices are low enough that the insurance of an online ticket costs nothing extra. The Alcazaba is $8.16 (€7) alone or $11.65 (€10) combined with Gibralfaro, sold on alcazabaygibralfaro.janto.es or at the gate, with no advance-booking obligation stated and no time slots stated. It opens 09:00 to 18:00 from 1 November to 31 March and to 20:00 the rest of the year, last entry an hour before, and it is free for everyone every Sunday from 14:00. The Picasso Museum is $15.15 (€13), reduced $12.82 (€11), free under 17, and its visit page says only buy online to make sure you get your ticket. It describes no time slot and no rule about which hour you enter. It opens every day of the year except 25 December and 1 and 6 January, Mondays included, which makes it the Monday answer in a city where the Junta's museums shut. It is free every Sunday in the last two hours, and on 28 February, 18 May, 27 September and 27 October. The Picasso Museum tickets page has the seasonal hours.

The Cathedral is $11.65 (€10), $17.48 (€15) with the virtual-reality add-on, sold online through its ticketing partner and at the door, with no slot rule published. Tourist visits start at 14:00 on Sundays, stop for the Feria on 15 and 16 August, and the building is free to enter from 08:30 to 09:00 every day before the ticketed hours begin. The rooftop visit is suspended for roof works and has no published price or date of return. The Cathedral tickets page has the seasonal closing times.

These need nothing arranged, and in several cases the venue says so. The Roman Theatre on Calle Alcazabilla is free at all times, Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 18:00 and Sunday to 16:00, closed Mondays. The Museo de Málaga in the Aduana is $1.75 (€1.50) and free for accredited EU citizens, Tuesday to Saturday 09:00 to 21:00. The Centre Pompidou is $10.49 (€9) and free from 16:00 on Sundays, closed Tuesdays. The Carmen Thyssen $13.98 (€12) and free from 16:00 on Sundays, closed Mondays. The Casa Natal Picasso $3.50 (€3) and free 16:00 to 20:00 on Sundays, open every day. The La Concepción botanical garden is $6.06 (€5.20) and cannot be booked at all: tickets are sold only at the gate, which the garden states outright, and it is free on Sunday afternoons in both seasons.

Outside the city, the Antequera dolmens issue their $1.75 (€1.50) ticket at the site museum when you arrive, free to EU citizens, and El Torcal has no ticket to issue. Ronda's municipal Bono at $13.98 (€12) is sold at the tourism office, and the Nerja cave is timed, which is the one exception on the ring worth knowing. The day trips hub marks it. Two Things That Are Not Tickets but Do Have Deadlines

The Caminito's four-day rule: if the operator closes the route for weather, you have four calendar days from the notice to choose a swap or a refund in your account, and asking for the refund forfeits the swap. And the Alhambra's day-before rule: individual online sales close at 23:59 the day before the visit, so a same-day online purchase is not offered. Neither is a lead time, but both are clocks.
