Málaga Museums: All 19, With Hours, Closed Days and the Free Windows

With half a day, the Picasso Museum and the Casa Natal, twenty minutes apart on foot, and the Museo de Málaga on the way down to the port if you carry an EU passport. With a full day, add the Thyssen in the morning and the Pompidou at the end of the Muelle Uno walk. With two days, the Tabacalera pair, the Museo Ruso and the Automobile Museum, in one afternoon, because they share a building 30 minutes west of the centre and the Museo Ruso is free from 16:00 on a Sunday. Everything else on the list is a specialist's stop: MIMMA for anyone travelling with children, the Museo del Vidrio for the guided hour, the Museo del Vino for the two tastings, the Peña Juan Breva for Tuesday night. Málaga museums and art galleries are listed together here only where a gallery keeps museum hours and a public programme, so CAC Málaga and La Térmica are on the map and the commercial galleries of Soho are not.

The decision most visitors get wrong is between the two Picasso houses. The Casa Natal at $3.50 (€3) is a birthplace with documents and a few works. The Museo Picasso Málaga at $15.15 (€13) is the collection, twelve rooms of it, and the audio guide is included. If money is the constraint, see the museum and walk past the house. The Junta's two sites, the Museo de Málaga and the Roman Theatre, close on Monday. The Ayuntamiento's Pompidou closes on Tuesday, and its Museo Ruso on Monday. The private foundations split: the Picasso Museum and the Casa Natal never take a weekday off, the Thyssen takes Monday.

The three smallest, the Museo del Vino, the Jorge Rando and the Peña Juan Breva, close on Sunday instead, because they keep office hours. So Monday has four central museums, Tuesday has all but one, and Sunday afternoon has almost all of them free.

Six never charge: the Museo de Málaga for accredited EU citizens, CAC Málaga, the Museo Jorge Rando, the Roman Theatre and its interpretation centre, the Peña Juan Breva's Tuesday and Friday sessions, and MUPAM by the absence of any tariff on its official page. Then every Sunday the paid ones open free in a sequence that can be walked. The Thyssen, the Pompidou, the Casa Natal and the Museo Ruso go free at 16:00. The Picasso Museum goes free in its last two hours: 16:00 from November to February, 17:00 from March to June and in September and October, 18:00 in July and August. Start at the Thyssen at 16:00, cross to the Casa Natal, and arrive at the Picasso Museum for its window. The three are within ten minutes of each other on foot. The Pompidou and the Museo Ruso are the two that need a decision, because they are 15 and 30 minutes from the centre in opposite directions.

Four dates add to the Sunday rule at some museums and not others. 28 February, the Día de Andalucía, is free at the Picasso Museum and the Casa Natal but is not listed on the Thyssen, Pompidou or Ruso pages. 18 May, International Museum Day, is free at the Picasso Museum, the Casa Natal, the Pompidou and the Thyssen, which also opens that Monday. 27 September is free at the Picasso Museum, the Casa Natal and the Pompidou. The Picasso Museum adds 27 October, its anniversary, and the Casa Natal adds 25 October, the painter's birthday. One official combined ticket exists among the museums: the Bono Arte Xperience at $19.23 (€16.50), $11.07 (€9.50) reduced, valid for one week across the Casa Natal Picasso, the Centre Pompidou Málaga and the Colección del Museo Ruso, the three museums the Ayuntamiento runs through its Agencia Pública. The three plain tickets bought separately come to $18.64 (€16), so the Bono saves nothing on the base entries. It pays only if you also take the Pompidou's temporary show at $4.66 (€4) and the Ruso's MEET show at $2.33 (€2) more, or want a week of re-entry.

The Thyssen sells its own combination, $17.48 (€15) for the museum plus the archaeological site under it, against $13.98 (€12) for the museum alone. The Museo Ruso's $9.32 (€8) for both its shows against $4.66 (€4) plus $6.99 (€6) separately is the one genuine saving on the page. No pass covers the Picasso Museum, the Museo de Málaga or the Alcazaba, and no official page describing a city-wide card could be read at the time of checking. the tickets hub has the full arithmetic and the reduced categories for every museum.

No museum in Málaga sells a timed slot, and none prints a rule about arriving late, so the booking question is only ever about summer certainty. The Picasso Museum's own site says to buy online to be sure of a ticket. Its shop is tickets.museopicassomalaga.org and the platform's entry card at $15.12 does the same job with free cancellation to 24 hours before. The three Ayuntamiento museums share one engine at eulenmalaga.arteyocio.com, and the Casa Natal charges €0.30 more per ticket online than at the door, which on a $3.50 (€3) ticket is a tenth of the price for no benefit. The Thyssen sells at entradas.carmenthyssenmalaga.org with no advance obligation stated. The Museo de Málaga, CAC, the Jorge Rando and the Roman Theatre issue no ticket for a free visit.

Guided visits are the other thing worth booking. The Picasso Museum's own educator-led visit is $81.60 (€70) in Spanish or $99.00 (€85) in English or French for a group of up to twenty, 50 minutes, plus tickets, by email. Its walk-in guide is $29.10 (€25) or $35.00 (€30) for up to six, 30 minutes, subject to availability at the desk. The platform's small-group tour with an art expert at $52.35, rated 4.9 from 104 reviews, sits between the two. The Museo del Vidrio is guided only and needs no booking under ten people. The Museo del Vino guides groups only, at €60 a group on top of the tickets.
