Frigiliana

The Nerja to Frigiliana line is now operated by Grupo Verano Azul, telephone 952 52 37 00, with a timetable in force from 10 August 2026. It runs 11 departures from Nerja on weekdays and Saturdays, 12 between 1 July and 14 September, and seven on Sundays and holidays. The fare and the journey time are not printed on the notice, and the ayuntamiento links a Google Maps pin for the Nerja stop rather than an address.

The Nerja end is on Avenida del Mediterráneo, the same area as the Alsa stop the Nerja page describes.

Reading the timetable

Three things fall out of it. First, the gap: there is no bus up from Nerja between 13:30 and 15:40 on a weekday, so a lunchtime arrival at the Nerja stop waits two hours, and the 14:00 and 15:20 buses down leave the village before the next one comes up. Second, the evening: the last bus down is 21:00 on weekdays, 22:00 in the summer window, and 21:10 on Sundays, which is late enough for dinner in the village and early enough that you must still find an Alsa bus back to Málaga afterwards, and Alsa prints no timetable.

Third, the Sunday service is half the weekday one, with the first bus up at 09:30 and a four-hour gap between 13:00 and 16:15. A weekday morning up and a late afternoon down is the shape that works.

From Málaga: no direct bus

No direct Málaga to Frigiliana bus is published by the ayuntamiento, by the tourist office or by Alsa, whose route pages for the pair either loop or return 404. The tourist office's how-to-get-here page describes road access only: the A-7 to exit 292, then the MA-105 up the hill, about 45 minutes from Málaga by car. The public route is therefore two legs, Alsa from Málaga bus station to Nerja and then the village bus, and the Nerja page explains that the first leg's fare and times exist only in Alsa's booking engine.

Whether the change at Nerja is worth it is the whole case for the coach tours on the tickets table. On a festival day it is the whole case for not driving.

The closest airport

Málaga airport, which sits on the far side of the city from Frigiliana. There is no airport bus in this direction. The way is the airport to city leg to Málaga, then Alsa to Nerja, then the village bus, or a hire car from the terminal on the A-7.

The casco histórico

The old town is the reason to come: narrow, steep, whitewashed streets of Moorish origin climbing the hillside, which the tourist office describes as the heritage that won Frigiliana the first Premio Nacional de Embellecimiento de los Pueblos de España in 1982 and its place among Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España. The village calls itself the Villa de las 3 Culturas, for the Muslim, Jewish and Christian past the festival is named after. It sits at roughly 300 to 350 metres above the sea, so every lane is a slope, and the coach listings warn of cobbled inclines.

The private car trip exists partly for people who want the hill roads driven for them. Nothing in the lanes is ticketed and nothing closes.

El Ingenio, the cane-honey factory

El Ingenio is a sixteenth-century building that the tourist office describes as the only cane-honey factory in Europe still working today: operational by 1729, with part of its 1909 machinery, including wood-fired boilers, still in use, a former chapel in which mass was authorised by Pope Clement X from 1662, and a sgraffito façade in earth and blue tones with two niches and sundials. It is a working factory, and the tourist office publishes no visitor ticket, no opening hours and no statement of whether a shop is open to the public, so this page lists it as a façade to find and a product to look for rather than a visit to book. The product is miel de caña, cane honey, which the village's own recipe page uses in fried aubergines with cane honey, in arropía and in marcochas.

The coach with the sweet-wine tasting is the one listing here that builds a tasting into the hour.

The listed monuments

The tourist office's monuments page names the Fuente Vieja, a seventeenth-century fountain built around 1640 by Íñigo Manrique de Lara. The Ermita de Ecce Homo. Los Reales Pósitos, the old royal granaries.

El Torreón. And the Jardín Botánico Santa Fiora. The Museo Arqueológico de Frigiliana is in the Casa de la Cultura on Cuesta del Apero, the same building as the tourist office, the library and the exhibition hall, so its hours are the office's unless a notice at the door says otherwise.

None of these carries a printed price on the pages read, and the fountain and the granaries are in the street.

Eating, and what this page will not name

Naming a restaurant on this site requires a citable list or the venue's own site, with the source and its year printed beside the name. For Frigiliana we hold neither, so no restaurant is named here, and the related search for a Frigiliana market has no official page behind it either. What is sourced is the cuisine: the tourist office's own page lists the cane-honey dishes above, and the coach listings build an hour around them.

The village's afternoon closure matters more than any menu: the tourist office itself shuts 14:30 to 17:30 in summer, and the bus timetable's two-hour midday gap suggests the lanes do the same.

The Ayuntamiento de Frigiliana announced the fourteenth Festival Frigiliana 3 Culturas for 27 to 30 August 2026, and the festival's own site carries the same dates. The 2025 edition ran on 30 and 31 August. The programme and any ticket prices were still being released when this page was checked, with the ayuntamiento's own wording being that details of the 2026 programme would be revealed over time, so nothing about performers or prices is printed here.

What the ayuntamiento does say is the scale: tens of thousands of people over the four days, in a village of about 3,000. That means full buses, no parking, and a village bus timetable that was written for an ordinary August. If the festival is why you are coming, the coach tours with a fixed seat are the sane route, and the 2027 dates are unpublished.

From 16 September to 30 June the office in the Casa de la Cultura on Cuesta del Apero opens Monday to Saturday and on holidays 10:00 to 18:00, and Sundays 10:00 to 14:00. From 1 July to 15 September it opens Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 14:30 and 17:30 to 21:00, and Sundays 10:00 to 14:30. The page carries a standing note that hours may be modified for health restrictions and asks visitors to confirm by phone, on 952 53 42 61.

Set against the bus timetable, a summer weekday afternoon in the village between 14:30 and 17:30 has no office, no bus up from Nerja until 15:40, and the lanes to yourself. A winter Sunday afternoon has no office at all. The Nerja Caves page has the other clock that governs this day, the cave's last entry at 15:30 or 16:30.

Three ways to spend the time, with what each leaves out. Bus times are the Grupo Verano Azul timetable. The Alsa leg to Nerja cannot be timed because Alsa prints nothing.

An hour is enough for the lanes and a photograph. Three is enough for the lanes, the fountain, the museum and a meal. The question is not how long Frigiliana takes but what it is paired with, and the Nerja page sets out the sea half of that day.

Frigiliana is the hill half of the east-coast day, and the bus timetable writes the plan: Alsa from Málaga to Nerja early, the 09:30 or 10:30 village bus up, three hours in the lanes with the fountain and the museum, the 13:00 or 14:00 bus down, and the afternoon at the Balcón de Europa and Burriana. If the cave is in the day, do it first from the Nerja (Cuevas) stop for the last-entry reason on the Nerja Caves page and come up the hill after, or let the coach loop do the ordering for you. It belongs on the third day of a stay based in the historic centre, where the bus station is a short ride away per the getting around page, and the three-day itinerary puts the coast there.
