Málaga Airport to the City Centre: Train, Bus, Taxi and Transfer

The train's two city stops are María Zambrano, the main station, where the AVE and the metro connect, and then Málaga Centro-Alameda at the foot of the Alameda Principal, which is the stop for the old town, the Cathedral and most hotels. From Centro-Alameda the Cathedral is a ten-minute walk and Plaza de la Marina about eight. The station name that matters is Centro-Alameda, not María Zambrano.

Getting off at the first stop puts you a 20-minute walk from the Cathedral with your bags.

The Fare, and the Zone Renfe Draws but Does Not Write

Renfe's fare table is by zones: $2.10 (€1.80) for one or two, $2.39 (€2.05) for three, $3.15 (€2.70) for four and $4.19 (€3.60) for five. The April 2025 fare map places Aeropuerto on the C1 between the zone-0 city stations and Torremolinos, but the zone of each station is drawn as a graphic that the document's text layer does not carry. Every guide prints €1.80 for the airport run and the tour listings on this site do the same.

We print it too, with that caveat, because the gate charges the fare in force whatever the map says. Tap a contactless bank card or phone on entry and again on exit, Renfe's Cronos system, and the correct fare is charged. Forget the exit tap and the maximum for all zones is charged instead.

From the fifth trip on the same card a 40 percent discount applies, which matters if you will ride the C1 to the beaches all week.

What Renfe Does Not Publish in Readable Form

First train, last train and the interval between them. Renfe's Cercanías timetable pages are rendered by script and expose no times in their HTML. AENA's train page links to Renfe rather than stating them.

The competitor pages that print a 06:xx first train and a 23:xx last train are quoting a timetable neither official site would let us read, so this page does not. Check the Renfe app on the day, and if the flight lands after about 23:00 assume the train has stopped and read the night section.

The stop is on Floor 0 at Arrivals. The single fare is $4.66 (€4), paid on board to the driver by Visa, Mastercard or cash. Luggage is carried free, which is the bus's one advantage over the train for a family with four cases.

The route calls at the city's bus station on Paseo de los Tilos beside María Zambrano, which states that at peak the frequency is no worse than every 20 to 25 minutes. Journey time, first and last bus and the intermediate stops are not stated on any page we could reach. The information line is +34 952 367 200.

For a hotel on the Alameda or the seafront the bus's route along the main avenue may drop you nearer than Centro-Alameda does, but without an official stop list this page cannot say where.

Other buses leave the airport for the towns rather than the city: the M-169 to Alhaurín de la Torre from Floor 0 Arrivals, a Marbella to airport line, and the consortium's M-135 from the cargo terminal to Alhaurín, Málaga and Santa Amalia. Their fares are the CTMAM zone-jump table printed on getting around Málaga, from $1.86 (€1.60) cash.

The airport tariffs have the same flagfall and kilometre rate as their city equivalents, but a minimum fare high enough to cover the 11 kilometres to the centre. That minimum is the number to remember: a driver cannot legally charge less, and on a normal run to the old town the meter should not show much more.

What the Meter Actually Shows

The Ayuntamiento publishes an orientative sheet of airport fares, and its current version is headed 'Tarifas 2025', so it runs about five percent under the 2026 tariff above. It puts Málaga centre, 11 kilometres, at about $19.81 (€17) on tariff 4, $25.60 (€22) on tariff 5 and $29.10 (€25) on tariff 9. Málaga Este and El Palo, 17 kilometres, at about $22.10 (€19), $26.80 (€23) and $30.30 (€26).

Note that the tariff-4 figure on the sheet, €17, is below the 2026 minimum of €18.24, which is exactly why this page prints the minimum first. AENA's own taxi page still shows the previous year's tariff, with minimums of €17.37, €21.72 and €24.93. The February 2026 resolution supersedes it.

Uber and the Apps

Two of the four questions Google shows under this search are about Uber, and the honest answer is that no official page publishes a ride-hailing fare, so this site cannot compare one with the meter. What can be said: a licensed taxi's meter is a regulated maximum, an app's price is dynamic, and the Arrivals rank has a queue that moves. If an app quotes below $21.30 (€18.24) by day it is below the taxi minimum.

If it quotes above $30.10 (€25.80) it is above the Friday-night taxi minimum. Radio taxis for a return booking answer on 952 333 333 and 952 320 000.

Read the group column before the price column. The cheapest listing is priced per person and scales from a sedan to a 14-seat minibus, with an hour of free waiting from your booked slot and a surcharge for any bag over a 24-inch case or any address outside the centre. The VIP one-way car is also per person, with WiFi and water, and carries eight reviews.

The sedan-or-minivan flat rate is priced per vehicle for up to three passengers and two check-in bags, tracks the flight and will drop you as far along the coast as Fuengirola or Torre del Mar. It also has the lowest rating of the three, 3.8 from 13 reviews, which the card says.

When does a transfer win? A party of four with a late flight and a hotel in Centro Histórico pays four train fares, $8.39 (€7.20), and then walks with cases up from Centro-Alameda, or pays a metered taxi that a Friday-night tariff puts at $30.10 (€25.80) minimum. The per-vehicle card at $70.51 costs more than the taxi and buys a driver who already knows the hotel.

The per-person card at $25.74 a head costs more than the taxi for four and less for one. For a solo traveller in daylight none of the three beats the train.

Because Renfe's first and last C1 trains are not published in readable form, the practical rule is to treat a landing after about 23:00 as a taxi or transfer arrival and a landing before about 06:00 as one too. Between midnight and 06:00 the taxi runs on tariff 5 or 9 with the $2.60 (€2.23) night supplement on top of a minimum of $26.20 (€22.48) or, on a Friday or Saturday night, $30.10 (€25.80). With two cases in the boot add $1.35 (€1.16).

The Arrivals rank works around the clock. The metro is irrelevant to the airport at any hour, and the bus station's side door opens only for arriving coaches between 01:00 and 06:00. The one thing that changes after midnight is the value of the pre-booked cards: an hour of free waiting and a driver holding a name sign is worth more at 01:30 than at 13:30, and the per-person transfer is the cheapest way to buy that certainty.

If your hotel is on the coast rather than in the city, the per-vehicle card is the only one of the three that goes there.

Marbella has no railway. The Marbella to airport bus that AENA lists is the public option, and its operator's page rendered no fare or timetable when we read it, so the coach price is not stated here. The table gives the town hall's guide figures for a taxi from the airport on the interurban tariffs 7 and 8.

For the day-trip towns the sheet is a warning rather than a plan: the Ronda, Nerja and Granada pages set the coach and the guided day trips against these figures, and a guided coach to Ronda with a village stop is listed from $34.31 on the tours hub.

The return is the same C1 from Centro-Alameda or María Zambrano, towards Fuengirola, and the airport is a stop of about 12 minutes out. Allow a margin for the gates and the walk to the platform. By taxi the city tariff applies, not the airport one, plus a $7.56 (€6.49) supplement for a service to the airport.

The Ayuntamiento's sheet from Plaza de la Marina puts the run at about $22.10 (€19) on tariff 1, $25.60 (€22) on tariff 2 and $28.00 (€24) on tariff 3. The Airport Express calls at the bus station on Paseo de los Tilos and arrives at Floor 0 of the terminal. Its intermediate stops are not stated on any page we could reach.

Two things to check on the morning: the state ministry's minimum-services page for rail, whose latest resolution when we read it was dated 28 July 2026, and its aviation page, which lists an indefinite cleaning-contractor strike at Málaga airport that began on 7 August 2026 and has affected the terminal rather than flights.
