What You Are Looking At

Menga and Viera stand 50 m apart at the Museo de Sitio on Carretera de Málaga 5, on the edge of town towards the Málaga road. Menga is the one people come for: a gallery of upright slabs roofed with capstones of a size nothing else in Europe matches, its axis pointed not at the sunrise but at the Peña de los Enamorados, the sleeping-face rock on the skyline. Viera beside it is a corridor tomb aligned on the summer solstice.

The Tholos de El Romeral is about 4 km away on the A-7283, a beehive-domed chamber of drystone under a mound, and the same ticket covers it. Groups must book it by phone. Walking distance from the bus station to the site museum is not stated by anyone, so allow for a taxi or the tour van.

Price, and Who Pays Nothing

The ticket is $1.75 (€1.50), issued at the Museo de Sitio at the start of the visit, and accredited EU citizens and ICOM or ICOMOS members enter free. The town's tourism site prints the dolmens as simply free, which is true for most of its readers and wrong for the rest. Take ID.

There is no reduced category because there is almost nothing to reduce. Free guided visits exist by email to the Conjunto, subject VISITA GUIADA, and the site's rules are short: no climbing on the tumuli, no animals, no smoking, no bikes, and food only on the parking platforms.

Hours by Season, and the 2026 Calendar

The dolmens keep three timetables a year and change on the equinoxes and solstice, which is either fitting or maddening depending on when you arrive. Entry stops 30 minutes before closing in every season.

The fortress on Plaza de los Escribanos is the Moorish citadel with the Torre del Homenaje, a Bien de Interés Cultural, and the view over the church towers to the Peña de los Enamorados that every photograph of the town is taken from. Entry is $5.83 (€5), last entry 17:15, dogs on a lead allowed. The reduced price for ages 8 to 12 and over-65s is printed two ways by the town itself, $4.66 (€4) on the Spanish schedules page and $3.50 (€3) on the English one. We print both because the town does, and the desk decides. Under-7s are free.

The Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor on the square below it is the first Renaissance building in Andalusia, built 1514 to 1550, accessible, with audio guides including a children's version. Entry is $4.66 (€4), reduced $2.33 (€2). The combined ticket for both is $9.32 (€8), reduced $4.66 (€4), and both are free on Tuesdays from 14:00 to 18:00 except on holidays and their eves, which is the single best reason to make Antequera your Tuesday.

The Bus

The Consorcio de Transporte Metropolitano del Área de Málaga runs line M-253 from Málaga bus station, next to María Zambrano, to Antequera bus station on Paseo García del Olmo, with a stop at the hospital, in about an hour. The first bus leaves Málaga at 07:30 and there are ten weekday trips. The first back from Antequera is 06:20 and the last 19:30, on a timetable the consortium dates 20 May 2025 to 31 December 2030. The M-255 Directo runs only on university term days, and the M-256 goes the long way via Valle de Abdalajís. Alsa serves the route too, but every Alsa page returned a 404 when we fetched it.

The fare is a CTMAM zone fare, and this is where the consortium falls silent: its table valid 15 July to 31 December 2026 prints singles by zone jump, $1.86 (€1.60) for none, $2.04 (€1.75) for one, $2.91 (€2.50) for two, $4.37 (€3.75) for three and $7.28 (€6.25) for four, with a consortium card roughly 40 percent under those, but nowhere prints how many zones Málaga to Antequera crosses. Ask the driver. The guided day from Málaga hands you an M-253 ticket for the return and its listing quotes weekday buses back at 14:00, 17:00 and 19:00 and Saturday ones at 13:25 and 17:00. Read the consortium's table before you rely on the Saturday times.

The Train, and Which Station

Renfe's route page lists a first departure from Málaga María Zambrano at 06:33 on AVE, Larga Distancia and Avant services, and says nothing else: no journey time, no fare, no frequency, because Renfe publishes those only inside its booking engine. The first train back from Antequera-Santa Ana is 08:22.

The trap is the station. Antequera has two. Antequera-Santa Ana is the high-speed station on the Madrid line, open 06:30 to 23:15, and the town's own tourism site puts it 18 km from the centre. The newer Estación Antequera AV is 2 km from the centre and the tourism site calls it recommended. Which one the Málaga trains use in 2026 is not resolved on the pages we read: Renfe's Avlo page names only Santa Ana, and a Renfe press text refers to the new station when it enters service. The tourism site also describes a bus between the town and Santa Ana on weekdays between 11:30 and 13:30 with a return at 12:40, cash, under seven euros, in wording too ambiguous to plan around. So: check the station name on your ticket before you buy, and if it says Santa Ana, take the M-253 bus instead. The station page covers the Málaga end.

The town splits into three places that are not next to each other: the dolmens on the Málaga road, the old town on the hill, and the Torcal about 30 minutes up a road with no bus, by the tour van's own timing. The routing is decided by how many of the three you want and whether you have a car.

Antequera's kitchen has two named things worth knowing before you order: porra antequerana, a thick cold tomato and bread cream that is the town's answer to salmorejo, and the bienmesabe and mollete pastries. The town's tourism site does not publish a restaurant list with prices, and this site names a venue only where a citable guide or the venue itself stands behind it, so there is no ranked list here. What is sourced is the timing: the dolmens' summer split at 14:00 hands you a long lunch whether you wanted one or not, and the fortress's last entry at 17:15 means eating before the climb, not after.

- The dolmens' free entry is a nationality test, not a free day. The Junta charges $1.75 (€1.50) and waives it for accredited EU citizens, so a British or American visitor pays and a French one does not. The town's site simply prints free [museosdeandalucia.es, informacion-general, read in Q3 2026]. - The Tuesday afternoon is the only free window on the hill. The fortress and Colegiata are free 14:00 to 18:00 every Tuesday except holidays and their eves, under the regional heritage law. The dolmens have no free day at all beyond the EU rule [turismo.antequera.es schedules page]. - Antequera has two railway stations and the town prefers the one Renfe barely mentions. Antequera AV is 2 km from the centre and recommended by the tourism office.

Antequera-Santa Ana is 18 km out, and Renfe's Avlo page names only Santa Ana [turismo.antequera.es how-to-get-there. Renfe.com Avlo destinations]. - The bus consortium prints every fare except the one you need. CTMAM's 2026 table gives singles by zone jump from $1.86 (€1.60) to $7.28 (€6.25) and never says how many zones the M-253 crosses [ctmam.es tarifas. It is the Tuesday, and it is the Monday too if the Torcal is the point, because the Torcal never closes and the Caminito del Rey does. As a bus day it is cheap and long. As a guided day it is five hours and both UNESCO sites.
