Málaga on Sunday and Monday: What Is Free, Open and Closed, Hour by Hour

Málaga's museums answer to four owners, and each keeps its own calendar. The Ayuntamiento runs the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro through its urban-planning agency and the Casa Natal, the Pompidou and the Museo Ruso through its cultural agency. All five open free on Sunday afternoon, the fortress and castle from 14:00 and the three museums from 16:00 to closing, and the three museums close on a weekday, Monday for the Ruso and Tuesday for the Pompidou, while the fortress and castle print no closed day at all. The Junta de Andalucía runs the Roman Theatre and the Museo de Málaga. Both are free at all times, the museum for accredited EU citizens and the theatre for everyone, both close on Monday, and both keep short Sunday hours, 10:00 to 16:00 and 09:00 to 15:00. The private and municipal foundations, the Picasso Museum and the Carmen Thyssen, choose their own free hours, the last two before closing at the Picasso Museum and from 16:00 at the Thyssen, and the Thyssen closes Monday while the Picasso Museum never does. The Diocese runs the Cathedral, which is free for worship 08:30 to 09:00 every day and opens to cultural visits on Sunday only from 14:00 to 18:00, after the morning Masses at 09:00, 10:00, 11:30 and 13:00.

The practical consequence is a Sunday that starts late and a Monday that starts early. Nothing paid is free before 14:00 on Sunday, so the morning is for the beach, the Cathedral's free half-hour, the Cortijo de Torres market or a long lunch, and the free sequence runs from 14:00 to 20:00. Monday has no free windows at all, but the venues that stay open, the Alcazaba, the Picasso Museum, the Casa Natal, the Pompidou, MIMMA and the Cathedral, are between them the top five of the things-to-do list, which is why a Monday in Málaga costs about $40.80 (€35) in tickets and loses nothing a first-time visitor came for.

The shape of the day is fixed by two clocks: nothing paid is free before 14:00, and the Picasso Museum's window is the last to open and the first to fill. So the morning is spent on things that are free anyway and the afternoon runs uphill first, then downhill through the museums as they open. The table gives the summer version.

In winter the Alcazaba closes at 18:00 and the Picasso Museum's window starts at 16:00, so compress the afternoon by an hour and drop the Thyssen or the Casa Natal, not the fortress.

What the Plan Skips, and Why

The Roman Theatre, because it closes at 16:00 on Sunday and is free on every other open day. See it from the street at 14:00 on the way to the lift. The Museo de Málaga, because it shuts at 15:00 and is free for EU citizens on a Tuesday-to-Saturday evening until 21:00.

La Concepción, because it is six kilometres north on EMT line 20 plus a 15-minute walk and its free window, 16:30 to 20:30 in summer, competes with the museums. Give it a Sunday of its own if gardens are the point. Atarazanas, because it is shut.

The Cathedral's cultural visit at $11.65 (€10), because the free half-hour at 08:30 shows the choir and the naves, and the audio guide can wait for a weekday. If the Picasso Museum's free queue reaches the corner of Calle Granada, the platform's entry card at $15.12 is the paid fallback and cancels free to 24 hours before.

Monday is the day to do the top of the list, because the top of the list does not close. Start at the Cathedral's free half-hour at 08:30, walk Calle Larios while the shops are still shut, and be at the Alcazaba's Calle Alcazabilla gate at 09:00 for $8.16 (€7), or $11.65 (€10) with Gibralfaro if the legs are willing. The Roman Theatre below it is closed but entirely visible from the street and the terraces opposite. Take the lift down to Calle Guillén Sotelo and walk the Parque de Málaga to Muelle Uno for the Pompidou at $10.49 (€9), open from 09:30 with lockers on floor 0. Lunch on the pier, then the Casa Natal on Plaza de la Merced at $3.50 (€3) and the Picasso Museum at $15.15 (€13) with its audio guide, open on Monday until 18:00 in winter and 20:00 in July and August. That is five of the first ten things to do for $37.30 (€32) in tickets, or $40.80 (€35) with the castle, and none of it needs a booking. MIMMA on Calle Beatas is the wet-weather alternative until 16:00.

What Monday cannot give you is a garden, a free museum or the gorge. La Concepción is shut, the Museo de Málaga and CAC are shut, and the Caminito del Rey does not open on Mondays at all, so a Monday day trip goes to El Torcal, free and open every day with a $3.50 (€3) shuttle, to Ronda by Avanza at $17.99 (€15.44), or to Nerja on Alsa's 47-a-day line, where the cave opens seven days. The Alcazaba and Roman Theatre walk at $14.66 runs on Mondays and ends inside the fortress. The theatre half is told from the pavement that day, and the operator's own reviews ask for clearer notice of it. Málaga in one day is the same route with times attached.

Two rules decide whether Calle Larios is open on a given Sunday. The regional commerce law (Texto refundido, article 19) authorises 16 Sundays and holidays a year, set by an annual Orden, and frees any shop under 300 square metres outside a mall to open whenever it likes. On top of that, a 2021 Resolución declared the entire municipality of Málaga a zona de gran afluencia turística during Semana Santa, Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, and from 1 June to 30 September, with indefinite validity.

Inside those windows any shop may open on any Sunday. Outside them, the 16-day list applies, and Málaga made no swaps to the regional list for 2026.

What Actually Opens

Muelle Uno's shops keep 10:00 to 22:00 seven days and its restaurants 12:00 to midnight at minimum, because the port is not a street. McArthurGlen Designer Outlet on Calle Alfonso Ponce de León 6 opens Monday to Sunday 10:00 to 22:00 with free parking, one Cercanías C1 stop from the airport at Plaza Mayor. Vialia, the mall inside María Zambrano station, keeps Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 22:00 and lists its 2026 opening Sundays on its own site.

Its restaurants run to midnight from Friday to Sunday. El Corte Inglés, Larios Centro and Plaza Mayor could not be read at the time of checking, so their Sunday hours are not stated here. The Sunday event that does not depend on any of this is the Cortijo de Torres market, 09:00 to 15:00 with 315 stalls and a 136-stall second-hand rastro beside it, on EMT lines 1, 19 and 20 or Cercanías C1 and C2.

The sales windows the Junta calls customary, 7 January to 7 March and 1 July to 31 August, are not legal periods since 2012 and shops set their own. The full shopping layer is on shopping in Málaga.

Sunday lunch is the meal Málaga does best and the one with the fewest options in the centre, because Atarazanas is shut and the wine museum with it. The chiringuitos of Pedregalejo and El Palo are open, El Pimpi on Calle Granada 62 opens at 12:00 seven days, and Antigua Casa de Guardia on the Alameda keeps its shortest hours of the week, 11:00 to 15:00. Monday reverses it: the market is open from 09:00, the Museo del Vino pours its two tastings for $8.16 (€7) from 10:00, and Casa de Guardia runs 10:00 to 22:00.

The Late Rules That Apply Every Night

Andalusia's Decreto 155/2018 sets closing at 02:00 for bars and restaurants, 03:00 for pubs with music and 06:00 for discotecas, plus one hour on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of a holiday, so a Sunday night in Málaga ends earlier than a Saturday one by law. Drinking in the street outside a permitted zone is fined up to €300 under Ley 7/2006 and up to €750 under the city's own ordinance. The Peña Juan Breva's free flamenco session is a Tuesday, not a weekend.

Kelipé's own show runs Wednesday to Sunday at 20:00 for $40.80 (€35) with a drink, and the Sunday flamenco cards start at $26.99. The full night is on Málaga nightlife and the fares on getting around.

Three 2026 public holidays fall on a Monday, 12 October, 2 November and 7 December, and on those days the Monday rule flips for some venues and not others. The Museo de Málaga opens on any holiday with holiday hours, 09:00 to 15:00, and on the Monday before a holiday too, which in 2026 means Monday 7 December ahead of the Inmaculada on the 8th. The Carmen Thyssen opens on 12 October and 7 December, and on 18 May for Museum Day. La Concepción opens on holiday Mondays with normal hours. The Antequera Dólmenes open on 5 January, 12 October, 2 November and 7 December. The Roman Theatre's page says only that other holidays should be checked by email, so treat it as closed on a holiday Monday unless the Junta says otherwise. The Pompidou stays open on holidays, including holiday Tuesdays, because its closed day is printed as 'every Tuesday' with 25 December and 1 January the only exceptions listed.

The other flip is the Sunday that is also a holiday. 28 February, the Día de Andalucía, is a Saturday in 2026 and free at the Picasso Museum and the Casa Natal all day, not just from the afternoon. The Thyssen, Pompidou, Ruso and Alcazaba pages do not list it. 18 May is a Monday in 2026 and free at the Picasso Museum, the Casa Natal, the Pompidou and the Thyssen, which opens specially for it. And the two local holidays, 19 August and 8 September, are days the Museo de Málaga opens and the Cathedral, in Feria week, keeps its 10:30 to 14:30 timetable.
