Málaga to Granada: the Alhambra in a Day

The Avant is the answer to the question most people arrive with. Renfe's own press release for the service says the trains connect the two cities in 1 hour and 10 minutes, stopping at Antequera AV and Loja, and the route page fetched on in Q3 2026 gives the first Málaga departure as 08:58. There is no fare printed anywhere on renfe.com outside the booking engine, and the daily count and the last return are not stated either.

The launch release spoke of two trains a day each way, but that is an old timetable and the Avant times were adjusted from 14 December of an unprinted year, so read the live search before you build the day around a return time. The ticket includes a free Cercanías connection at the Málaga end, which matters if you are starting from the airport or a coastal hotel.

From Granada Station to the Alhambra

No official page prints the walk from the train station to the ticket gates, so this page does not either. What Granada's transport authority does publish is the microbus: line C30 Alhambra–Centro runs between Pavaneras and the Alhambra ticket office, line C32 Alhambra–Albaicín does the same from the old quarter, and the ordinary single fare is $1.86 (€1.60), paid to the driver in cash or by card, in force since 1 October 2024. Since 27 April 2026 the C30 has been diverted because of works on calle Santiago, so do not rely on the stop names printed in older guides.

The Visita Diurna General is the ticket the whole trip is built around: it covers the Alcazaba, the Nasrid Palaces and the Generalife, and it is the only day ticket that includes the palaces. Everything else on the list is either a subset or a night visit. The ticket is nominative, personal and non-transferable.

You carry your original DNI or passport to the gates, and once the ticket is printed the name cannot be changed. Children under 12 are free, but their ticket has to be reserved at the same time as the adults' purchase, a rule that catches families who add a child later. Any purchase is, in the Patronato's words, definitive and firm.

How the Sale Works, and Where It Stops

Advance purchase by individuals runs until 23:59 on the day before the visit, online, through the ATM network or by phone, by bank card. The Patronato prints no maximum advance window: the widely quoted "up to a year ahead" is on no official page read for this site, so the honest guidance is to open the calendar as soon as your date is fixed and to read it again a few days out, because part of the capacity is reserved for the institutional channel and unused allocations are released back into general sale. If you collect at a machine, the buyer collects with the ID document and the card used, at least an hour before the printed Nasrid time.

Reduced categories exist for EU citizens over 65, Carnet Joven holders and people with a disability of 33 percent or more, but the amounts were not printed in the tariff text read, so this page does not guess them.

The Alhambra manages its crowd by admitting 300 people to the Nasrid Palaces every half hour, and the time printed on your ticket is the only time you may enter them. The official pages say it twice, in two forms: entry to the palaces must be at the time shown on the ticket, and access to the space is only possible at the hour indicated. Arrive late and you have lost the palaces, not the rest. The Alcazaba and the Generalife stay open to you all day. No tolerance window in minutes is printed anywhere, and the 30-minute figure that circulates online is the length of the capacity block, not a grace period. Treat the printed time as a train departure.

For a day from Málaga this turns the timetable inside out. The 08:58 Avant arrives at about 10:10. Add the C30 or the climb and the ticket check, and the earliest palace slot you can safely hold is around 11:30. Book the slot first, then choose the train that gets you there an hour before it, then leave the Generalife and the Alcazaba for after the palaces, because those two do not care what time you turn up. A ticket that puts you in the palaces at 09:00 is unusable from Málaga by train. The coach tours solve this by leaving Málaga before 08:00 and holding a slot that matches their arrival.

Why the Coach Tours Cost Five Times the Ticket

The full-day trip with the Alhambra lists at $138.44 against a $25.90 ticket. The gap buys a coach both ways, an official guide with headsets inside the palaces and free time in the centre, and it also buys the operator's allocation: on a date where tickets.alhambra-patronato.es shows nothing, the tour is the one seat that still comes with a palace slot. Read the option names before paying.

On the guided tour with entry tickets only the Full Alhambra option includes the Nasrid Palaces. The Essential options do not, and the same dependency applies to the Alhambra by bus trip. Every one of these needs your passport number at booking, none can be changed afterwards, and the refund on cancellation ranges from nothing to 84 percent, which is the price of a nominative ticket bought on your behalf.

The variable is not Granada, it is the slot. Once the Nasrid time is fixed, everything before it is transport and everything after it is choice: the Generalife takes about an hour, the Alcazaba half of that, and the walk down through the Cuesta de Gomérez to Plaza Nueva is twenty minutes on foot.

The day visit runs 08:30 to 18:00 from 15 October to 31 March and 08:30 to 20:00 from 1 April to 14 October, every day of the week, with the ticket office opening at 08:00. The complex closes on 25 December and 1 January and on no other printed date. Night visits are a separate ticket and a separate calendar: Friday and Saturday 20:00 to 21:30 in the winter period, Tuesday to Saturday 22:00 to 23:30 in the summer one. A night visit is not a way to do the palaces on a day trip from Málaga unless you sleep in Granada. The last Avant back is not stated on renfe.com, and the where to stay page sets out why a night away is a reasonable answer to that.

No general last-entry time is printed because the palaces are governed by the slot. The Alcazaba and Generalife simply close with the site. Summer visitors should note the arithmetic on the hill: the walk from the Generalife to the palaces is exposed, and the Málaga weather page's ERA5 figures show August highs of 29.2°C at the coast, with Granada's inland plateau routinely hotter.

- The general ticket is $25.90 (€22.27), not €19.09. The older figure is still on plenty of English pages. The Patronato's tariff page prints 22.27 € and no validity date, so it can move again without notice [alhambra-patronato.es, horarios-y-tarifas]. - A child under 12 is free but not ticketless. The free child ticket has to be reserved in the same transaction as the adults'. Add the child later and there may be no capacity left in the same slot [alhambra-patronato.es, horarios-y-tarifas and FAQ]. - Nobody official promises a one-year booking window. The claim is absent from the tariff page, the FAQ and the prepare-your-visit page, which only say that unused institutional allocations are released back into sale [alhambra-patronato.es, preguntas-frecuentes]. - The Palace of Charles V costs nothing. It stands inside the walls and is open access, as are the Silla del Moro and the Torres Bermejas outside them.

A sold-out day still gives you the Renaissance palace and the views [alhambra-patronato.es, prepara-tu-visita]. - The C30 bus has been diverted since 27 April 2026. Works on calle Santiago moved the route, so the stop named in a pre-2026 guidebook may not exist. The fare is $1.86 (€1.60) to the driver either way [movilidadgranada.com, línea C30 and tarifas].

The Alhambra sits on the Sabika hill. The city that built it is across the Darro. With a late-morning slot, the afternoon is enough for the Albaicín, the old Moorish quarter climbing the opposite slope, whose Mirador de San Nicolás looks straight back at the palaces with the Sierra Nevada behind them. The C32 microbus at $1.86 (€1.60) links the Alhambra ticket office and the Albaicín directly, which saves a descent and a climb. The Dobla de Oro ticket at $35.50 (€30.48) adds the Andalusi monuments of the Albaicín, the Bañuelo baths among them, to the general visit, but it is only worth the extra $9.60 if you will actually walk the quarter with time in hand. A day-tripper with a 17:00 train usually will not.

The cathedral quarter below Plaza Nueva is a flat ten minutes from the microbus terminus at Pavaneras, and it is where the coach tours drop you for the free hours. None of the packs behind this site carries the cathedral's or the Royal Chapel's tariff, so this page prints no prices for them. Check the door. What it can say is that Granada's free-tapa habit, a small plate with each drink, is real enough that the $40.72 seat-only coach leaves lunch to you on purpose.

Granada is the day trip to fix first, because it is the only one whose central ticket can genuinely be unavailable. On a three-night stay the pattern that works is to book the Alhambra slot the moment the flights are confirmed, then place the Caminito del Rey, the other named and timed ticket in this ring, on a different day, and leave Córdoba or Seville as the flexible option that needs no advance slot. If the Alhambra calendar is already empty, the coach tours' allocations are the last door, and the full-day trip is the one that includes the palaces without an option to misread.
