Málaga or Seville: Which to Pick, Dimension by Dimension

Málaga's airport is the region's international gateway, and the Cercanías C1 runs from a station inside the terminal to María Zambrano in about 8 minutes and to Centro-Alameda in about 12, on a single fare of $2.10 (€1.80) for one or two zones. The airport to city page has the taxi tariff and the express bus at $4.66 (€4). The same station is where the Madrid AVE arrives, where the Avant to Granada leaves at 08:58, and where the first Seville train leaves at 06:37, with the bus station on Paseo de los Tilos next door for Ronda, Marbella, La Línea and Algeciras. A visitor who lands at Málaga and sleeps in Málaga has every onward leg from one square kilometre.

Seville's arrival is Santa Justa, open 04:30 to 00:30, which is the one Seville transport fact this site's packs carry. Its airport and its city buses were not researched for this page and are not described. What Renfe does print is the pair of first trains, 06:37 out of Málaga and 06:50 out of Seville, and what it does not print is the journey time or the fare on either. Verdict: Málaga, on the airport and the junction. Seville is a destination. Málaga is a hub that happens to have a beach.

The two cities receive almost identical rain, 534 mm a year in Málaga and 539 mm in Seville, and both spend it on the same months: about 100 mm in each of November and December, next to nothing in July. The sea does the rest. Málaga's July mean maximum is 30.5°C. Seville's is 36.0°C, and Seville stays above Málaga's high in every month from March to October.

Winter reverses it by a fraction: Málaga's January mean maximum of 16.8°C edges Seville's 16.0°C, and Málaga's January mean minimum of 7.4°C is warmer than Seville's 5.7°C. Málaga's annual sunshine is 2,905 hours on the same normals. Seville's page prints the monthly hours but no annual total, so that cell is left honest.

Verdict: Málaga from June to September, a tie the rest of the year, Seville by a degree or two in spring if you like it warm. The best time to visit page turns Málaga's normals into months. The practical reading for Seville is that a July afternoon at the Alcázar starts from a 36°C average, and the Seville day trip page notes the Cathedral's 09:30 summer opening for exactly that reason.

Seville wins this dimension and it is not close, which is why the page prints the prices rather than pretending otherwise. The Real Alcázar's general ticket is $18.06 (€15.50) for the ground floor of the palaces and the gardens, with the Cuarto Real Alto a further $6.41 (€5.50). The Cathedral with the Giralda is $15.15 (€13) online or $16.31 (€14) at the window on a tariff in force since 1 January 2026, and it includes the Iglesia de El Salvador. Both are walk-up tickets with no name on them, the Alcázar's window opening at 09:00, and the Seville from Málaga page prints the hours and the two free slots, the Alcázar's sold-out Monday product and the Cathedral's Sunday visit from 16:30 by reservation.

Málaga's answer is a fortress and a hill. The Alcazaba is $8.16 (€7) alone or $11.65 (€10) on the combined ticket with the Gibralfaro castle, and both are free every Sunday from 14:00. The Roman theatre below it is always free. The Centre Pompidou is $10.49 (€9). And the Picasso Museum and the Cathedral with its roof walk have their own pages with the official tariffs. Málaga's gates cost roughly half of Seville's and the free-hours map is unusually generous. Verdict: Seville for the buildings, Málaga for the bill and for the museums. If the Alcázar and the Giralda are the reason for the trip, that is the end of the argument. Málaga's beaches begin at the port and run east through La Malagueta to Pedregalejo and El Palo, and the beaches page sorts them by sand, services and the walk from the centre. The espetos, sardines skewered and grilled over an olive-wood fire in a beached boat, are the one dish the city is known for, and the where to eat page says which chiringuitos are cited by a source rather than by a blog. Seville is 80 km or so from the Atlantic and has a river. Verdict: Málaga, by default. The only way this dimension matters to a Seville trip is the do-both minimum at the end of this page, where a night on the coast is the reason to come down the line.

Málaga's centre is the dear end of its own market and still cheaper than most visitors expect: the Centro Histórico median is $134.00 (€115) with the middle half of listings between $101.40 (€87) and $160.80 (€138), Soho's median is $163.10 (€140), La Malagueta on the beach is $89.70 (€77), and the streets around María Zambrano station come in at $75.70 (€65), a fifteen-minute walk from the Alcazaba. Verdict: not decided here. A comparison that prints one city's median and guesses the other's is the kind this site refuses to publish. What can be said is structural: a Málaga base with a Seville day trip pays for one hotel, and the Seville day trip with Real Alcázar tickets at $98.88 or the day trip with optional tickets at $45.37 is the price of not moving your bags.

This is the dimension where Málaga's junction pays. From María Zambrano the Avant reaches Granada in 1 h 10 for the Alhambra, whose $25.90 (€22.27) named ticket the Granada page explains. The first Córdoba train leaves at 06:33 and the Córdoba page shows how to use the Mezquita's free hour. Avanza buses from the station next door reach Ronda for $17.99 (€15.44), La Línea for Gibraltar at $19.33 (€16.59) and Algeciras for the Tangier ferry at $21.30 (€18.28). Cercanías and Alsa reach the Caminito del Rey and Nerja. The day trips hub ranks all of them, and the point is that they radiate in every direction.

Seville's ring was not researched for this site, and this page will not borrow a list from a blog. What the packs do show is that Córdoba sits on the same high-speed line as Seville, so a Seville base reaches the Mezquita as easily as a Málaga one, and that Granada, Ronda and the coast are all further from Seville than from Málaga by the operators' own routes. Verdict: Málaga, on geography. A traveller who wants three different days out in five days should sleep on the coast.

Málaga's table is documented on this site to the standard the owner set: a restaurant is named only if the Michelin Guide, Repsol or the venue's own site names it first. On that rule Málaga holds four Michelin stars in the 2026 guide, José Carlos García on Muelle Uno, Kaleja, Blossom on the top floor of the Museo de Málaga and Palodú, new this year, plus three Bib Gourmands, and the where to eat page prints them with their addresses and years. Seville's restaurants were not researched for this site, and a comparison that names Seville tapas bars from memory would break the rule that makes the Málaga list worth reading. Verdict: Málaga, on the evidence available here, with the caveat that the evidence is one-sided. Seville's evening culture is real and undocumented on this page. Málaga's is documented and cheaper to reach from the beach.

The two cities are joined by one railway and two published first departures: 06:37 from Málaga María Zambrano to Sevilla Santa Justa and 06:50 back. Renfe prints neither the journey time nor the fare on its route pages, so the booking engine holds both. The María Zambrano station page covers the Málaga end. On those facts the minimum is three nights: two in Málaga and one in Seville, or three in Málaga with Seville as the day trip.

The day-trip version is the cheaper one and the more common. Take the 06:37, be at the Alcázar's Patio de Banderas window when it opens at 09:00, do the Cathedral and the Giralda before the tower closes at 17:00, and take an evening train back. The Seville page has the two-monument routing at about twelve hours door to door. The overnight version is the one for the Cuarto Real Alto, the Sunday Cathedral slot or a July trip that wants the Alcázar at 09:30 and the coast the next afternoon.
