Málaga Train Station: María Zambrano, and the Two Others

The surface level is the high-speed hall: the AVE and Avlo platforms, the long-distance and Avant trains, the ticket office and the departure boards, with the Vialia shopping centre wrapped around the concourse and a hotel in the same complex. The Cercanías platforms are underground and reached from inside the building, signposted Cercanías. This is where the C1 to the airport and the coast and the C2 to Álora leave from.

Two things follow. A connection from an AVE to the airport train is a change of level inside one station, not a walk between two. And a visitor who has bought a Cercanías ticket at the surface machines still has to go down to use it.

Renfe runs AVE and the low-cost Avlo between Madrid Puerta de Atocha and María Zambrano. The first departure from Madrid is at 07:35. Over the summer of 2026 Renfe added extra Avlo trains on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4 August to 9 September with promotional fares advertised from €9 and €5 for children.

That promotion ends on the day this page was checked, so no headline fare is printed as current. An AVE or long-distance ticket includes a free Cercanías 'Combinado' journey, which covers the hop to Centro-Alameda or the airport on the day of travel. The journey time between Madrid and Málaga is not stated on the Renfe route page we fetched, and neither are the Córdoba and Seville timings.

The practical consequence for a visitor is that the high-speed fare is a dynamic price you buy on the operator's site, and the one number that does not move is the Cercanías fare below. Anyone comparing a day in Seville or Córdoba by train against a guided coach day should read the day trips hub, where the coach tours are priced from the platform's listings.

Fares are by zone, not by distance. The city stations sit in zone 0. The airport's zone is drawn on the map rather than written, so the €1.80 airport fare that every guide prints is repeated here with that caveat.

Tap a contactless bank card or phone at the gate on entry and again on exit and Renfe's Cronos system charges the fare in force. Miss the exit tap and the five-zone maximum is charged. From the fifth trip on the same card the system applies a 40 percent discount by itself.

The Two Lines

The C1 runs from Centro-Alameda through María Zambrano, Victoria Kent and Guadalhorce to the airport, then Plaza Mayor, Los Álamos, La Colina, Torremolinos, Montemar Alto, El Pinillo, Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel, Torremuelle, Carvajal, Torreblanca, Los Boliches and Fuengirola. Two station names in the map's text layer are garbled and are left out. AENA puts the airport at 8 minutes from María Zambrano, Benalmádena at 18 and Fuengirola at 34 from the airport.

The C2 runs inland to Aljaima, Pizarra and its terminus at Álora. El Chorro, the Caminito del Rey station, is not on the Cercanías map. It is a Media Distancia stop, and its times and fare could not be read from Renfe's script-rendered pages, which the Caminito page explains.

First and last trains and frequencies for both lines are not stated in readable form anywhere official. Use the Renfe app.

The Cathedral is about 1.4 kilometres east, Plaza de la Marina about 1.2 and Centro-Alameda station about 600 metres. On foot the route runs along the Explanada, across the river and up the Alameda Principal, flat all the way. With luggage the neatest move is the one most people miss: if you arrived by Cercanías, or hold an AVE ticket with its free Combinado, stay on or board the C1 or C2 for one stop to Centro-Alameda and walk ten minutes from there.

The metro's El Perchel stop is the interchange with the station and the home of the operator's customer office, open Monday to Friday 08:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 15:00, telephone 900 70 70 72. Line 1 from here reaches Atarazanas, by the market, in two stops. Line 2 goes the other way to the sports palace.

The Estación de Autobuses on Paseo de los Tilos is about 230 metres from María Zambrano, three minutes on foot, and it is where the coaches to Nerja, Ronda, Granada and the coast leave from. It opened in 1985, has 39 platforms, is open 06:00 to 01:00 with a side door for night arrivals, and answers 952 350 061 daily from 07:00 to 21:00. Alsa sells at windows 4 and 5, Avanza and Portillo at 14 and 15, the Madrid coaches at window 20.

The Airport Express bus calls here at what the station describes as no worse than every 20 to 25 minutes at peak, and a taxi rank works around the clock at the door. Left luggage is not stated: the station's consignas page returns a 404, which together with Adif's block means neither of Málaga's two transport hubs would tell us where to leave a bag. Rail strikes in Spain run to published minimum services. The state transport ministry keeps a page of the resolutions, one per strike, and the latest entry when we read it was dated 28 July 2026. Each fixes the percentage of trains that must run and links the PDF.

On a strike day the protected trains are listed by operator, and the Cercanías services are typically reduced rather than stopped. The same ministry's aviation page listed an indefinite cleaning-contractor strike at Málaga airport from 7 August 2026, which affects the terminal rather than the C1. The metro and the city buses fall under the Junta and the Ayuntamiento, whose minimum-services page could not be located, so for those the tourist office on Plaza de la Marina is the place to ask.
