Day Trips from Málaga

María Zambrano is the hub, under a kilometre from the old town and one metro stop from El Perchel. The station page has the walk. Four trips are rail trips.

The Caminito and El Chorro are on the Media Distancia Málaga to Seville line and the Proximidad extensions of the C-2: the 08:24 reaches El Chorro at 09:02, the 09:40 at 10:33, the 13:20 at 13:58. Returns at 09:51, 10:37, 10:56, 15:12 and 20:18 daily, with 16:39 in winter, 18:03 on Fridays and Sundays and 18:38 in summer. That PDF is dated 20 March 2023 and is the only timetable Renfe publishes, so check the engine.

Granada is the Avant in 1 h 10, first at 08:58. Seville's first train is 06:37 and Córdoba's 06:33, and every Madrid train calls at Córdoba. Antequera has two stations, Santa Ana 18 km from town and Antequera AV 2 km from it, and which service uses which is not resolved on the pages we read.

Ronda has a Media Distancia from 09:17 whose duration Renfe does not print.

By Bus

The bus station is on Paseo de los Tilos beside María Zambrano, 39 platforms, open 06:00 to 01:00, with Alsa at windows 4 and 5 and Avanza at 14 and 15. Avanza's fares are the only ones published, in force since 1 June 2026, and its timetable since 26 June 2026. The consortium lines to Mijas and Antequera charge by zone jumps, $1.86 (€1.60) to $7.28 (€6.25) single, and the zone count for a given line is not printed, so the M-112 fare of $2.91 (€2.50) to Mijas is the one figure that is.

Where Only a Car or a Coach Works

El Torcal has no public transport, in the operator's own words, and the walk from Antequera is not one anybody does. A taxi from Antequera or the guided hike with transfer is the choice. Setenil has no scheduled bus this guide could verify, which leaves the Ronda and Setenil coaches or a hire car via Ronda.

Frigiliana is reachable, but only as Málaga to Nerja by Alsa and Nerja to Frigiliana by the hourly Verano Azul bus, so a day that also includes the cave is three buses each way. Those three are where a coach at $30 to $80 earns its fare on time alone. The Mijas quad and the Benalmádena catamarans are the reverse case: activities you cannot buy at a gate.

The Caminito del Rey is closed every Monday, on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January, and on any morning the operator calls a weather closure on its website and Telegram channel. Tickets were on sale only for dates up to 6 December 2026 when we read the shop, with later dates to be released. Each ticket is nominative, must be personalised before download, and there is no refund for a missed slot.

The Caminito tickets page has the whole rule set. The Alhambra's online sale closes at 23:59 the day before, tickets are nominative and checked against an original passport, and the Nasrid Palaces admit only at the printed half-hour. No maximum advance window is printed, and unused institutional allocations are re-released, which is why the shop sometimes shows a date it showed as full the week before.

The Nerja cave is timed to the minute with no changes or refunds.

Mondays therefore point at Ronda, Marbella, Mijas, Nerja town, Gibraltar and the three rail cities, and away from the Caminito and the dolmens. A Sunday afternoon in the city is free at half its museums, so the better trade is often a Sunday trip and a Monday museum, which is the argument the Sunday and Monday openings page makes in full.

Three villages compete for the photograph. Frigiliana has the credentials: first winner of the national prize for the beautification of Spanish villages in 1982, a member of the Pueblos Más Bonitos association, whitewashed streets at 300 m over the Nerja coast, and a working sugar-cane honey factory the ayuntamiento calls the only one in Europe. Mijas Pueblo is closer, 70 minutes on a $2.91 (€2.50) bus, and has the burro-taxis, the oval bullring and a Picasso ceramics collection at $3.50 (€3).

Setenil is the strangest, with streets built under the rock, and the one whose facts could not be verified. If the day is about the village alone, Frigiliana. If it is a half-day from the city, Mijas.

If it is Ronda's day anyway, Setenil comes with the coach.

• Half-day by bus: Marbella's old town, 45 to 60 minutes each way, last bus back 01:10. Mijas Pueblo on the M-112 or via Fuengirola.
• Half-day by train: Antequera's dolmens, about an hour by bus or a train to a station that may be 18 km from town, closed Mondays.
• Half-day by sea: the Benalmádena catamarans, one hour with dolphins at $32.57 or two and a half with tapas and a swim at $52.35, from a marina on the C1 line at Arroyo de la Miel.

The Caminito coaches list from $68.64 to $80.27 and include the $11.65 (€10) ticket and, usually, the $2.91 (€2.50) shuttle, so the transport, the guide and the guaranteed slot cost about $55 to $65. The train is 38 minutes and its fare is in the engine, so the DIY day is the gate plus two train tickets plus the shuttle. Granada's coaches list at $138.44 to $151.23 against a $25.90 (€22.27) Alhambra ticket, which makes the coach about $115 for a 1 h 10 train each way and a guide, but it also solves the one problem money cannot otherwise fix: a slot on a sold-out date.

Ronda's coaches at $29.08 to $34.84 are cheaper than the two Avanza fares they replace, $35.98 (€30.88) return, and add Setenil. That is the one trip where the coach wins on price as well as time. Gibraltar's at $29.08 to $34.31 are below the $38.70 (€33.18) bus return, with the £30 reserve ticket extra either way.

Marbella and Mijas coaches at $45.37 to $57 replace a $9.10 (€7.81) or $2.91 (€2.50) bus. You pay for the guide and for Puerto Banús, not for the transport.
