Soho, Málaga: the Barrio de las Artes

Soho is administratively part of District 1, Málaga Centro, the same district as the old town. Its four edges are all roads: the Alameda Principal on the north, which is the boundary with the walled core. Plaza de la Marina on the east, where the Ayuntamiento's central tourist office stands at number 11. Avenida de Manuel Agustín Heredia on the south, the port-side road along the Palmeral. And the Guadalmedina river with Avenida del Comandante Benítez on the west. Inside is a grid of straight streets laid out on 19th-century reclaimed land, the Ensanche Heredia, named for the industrialist family whose warehouses and offices stood here when the port was the city's business.

The name Soho was not given by the city. The Wikipedia article records residents' and traders' associations adopting it at the end of the 2000s to relaunch a district that had emptied as the port's business moved out, and the Ayuntamiento's urban-environment office then backed the street-art programme that gave the name something to point at. Barrio de las Artes is the official-sounding suffix. You will see both on the same sign.

The scale

Twenty hectares is small: the barrio is roughly 500 m by 400 m, and its longest walk, from the Atarazanas market on the north-west corner to Plaza de la Marina on the east, is under ten minutes. Our estimate of nine minutes from the Cathedral is 0.6 km in a straight line with a detour factor, and it is flat the whole way. That scale is why this page argues against booking a Soho tour: there is nothing here a guide can get you into that you cannot walk into yourself.

What the OMAU page says, as quoted in the search-engine snippet of a page we could not open: MAUS, Málaga Arte Urbano Soho, was promoted by OMAU and coordinated by Fernando Francés, then director of the CAC Málaga. It was launched in 2013. And its headline works are the two murals by Obey, the American artist Shepard Fairey, and the British artist D*Face on the side façade of Calle Comandante Benítez 14, the building behind the CAC, each roughly 15 by 40 metres. We print those facts as official-snippet, page-unverified, which is the honest grade.

What no official source we could reach says: the mural on Calle Casas de Campos widely attributed to the Belgian artist Roa, the works credited to Spanish crews on the streets between Calle Tomás Heredia and Calle Vendeja, and any map of which walls are still standing. Those attributions appear on Google Arts and Culture and on blogs. Street art is painted over, and a 2013 wall may be a 2026 car park. This page names no artist beyond the two on the documented wall.

A negative finding on the street market

A recurring search asks about a Soho street market. No Ayuntamiento market page lists one: the municipal mercadillos page catalogues the Cortijo de Torres Sunday market, the second-hand rastro there and the Mercadillo Europa in Huelin, and Soho appears on none of them. Any market in the barrio is a private or occasional event, and we could not find it documented on an official page as of in Q3 2026.

The Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, on Calle Alemania at the barrio's south-west corner, occupies the old wholesale market building and shows contemporary art in rotating exhibitions. Entry is free. The Ayuntamiento's facilities page gives it a winter timetable of Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 20:00 and a summer one, 20 June to 24 September, of 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 21:00, closed Mondays in both. Because the museum's own site was unreadable on the day we checked, treat the exact summer dates as the city's statement rather than the museum's, and expect a closed door on Monday.

The Teatro del Soho CaixaBank on Calle Córdoba 13 is a commercial theatre with a box office that its own site opens 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 21:00. The days of the week are not stated on the page we read, tickets are also sold through El Corte Inglés, and the theatre prints neither its capacity nor its opening year. The telephone is 952 42 91 73. Programme prices are per show. The city's other stages, the Cervantes and the Echegaray, are in the old town and on the nightlife page.

Cávala, at Alameda de Colón 5 on the west side of the grid, is listed as Michelin Recommended with a €€€ price band and holds one Guía Repsol Sol in the 2026 list. The guide describes surprise tasting menus and a cellar past a thousand references. Tragatá Málaga, Alameda Principal 3, on the boundary with the old town, is Michelin Recommended at €€ and gained a Repsol Sol new in 2026. Antigua Casa de Guardia, Alameda Principal 18, is not a restaurant but the 1840 wine canteen whose barrels are the shortest introduction to what Málaga wine tastes like. Its own site opens it Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 22:00, Friday and Saturday to 22:45, Sunday 11:00 to 15:00.

The restaurants that fill the grid's pavements between Calle Tomás Heredia and Calle Vendeja are the ones every blog lists and no guide we can cite has assessed. We do not name them. Base9, a 2026 Bib Gourmand, is on the far side of the river in Perchel Sur near the station and is not a Soho address. The where to eat page has the full citable list and the tapas walks, of which the Málaga tapas tasting tour meets nearest to Soho at the Atarazanas market.

No official body publishes crime figures by barrio, so the honest answer is that Soho is subject to the same advice the national police give for every Spanish city centre: bags closed and in front on public transport, valuables in front pockets, attention at cash machines, and no luggage left unwatched at check-in. What Soho does have, uniquely, is the office that deals with the aftermath: the SATE tourist-assistance desk sits inside the central tourist office at Plaza de la Marina 11, on the barrio's east edge, and takes reports in the victim's language, cancels cards and contacts consulates, on 902 999 818. The office is open daily, 09:00 to 20:00 from 1 April to 31 October and to 18:00 the rest of the year.

The night-time facts are the regional ones: bars to 02:00, an hour later on Friday, Saturday and holiday eves, and a fine of up to €750 under the city's ordinance for drinking in the street. The safety and scams page has the full list and the emergency numbers.

The Metro's Line 1 ends at Atarazanas, under the Alameda at the barrio's north-west corner, and the Cercanías C1 from the airport stops at Centro-Alameda a few metres from it. Between them they connect Soho to the airport in about 12 minutes and to María Zambrano in one stop. EMT line 1 runs the Alameda east to west, line 14 links Plaza de la Marina to the Paseo de la Farola and Teatinos, and line 36 stops at Alameda de Colón on the west side.

A single is $1.63 (€1.40), a trip on the ten-journey card is $0.58 (€0.50), and under-14s ride free through 2026 by the Ayuntamiento's communiqué.

On foot, the old town is across the Alameda, the Muelle Uno promenade and the Centre Pompidou are round Plaza de la Marina to the east, and the cruise terminals are along the quay beyond them. Cruise passengers walking in from the Levante quay pass through Soho's east edge to reach the Cathedral, which is why the barrio fills in the middle of a cruise day. The cruise port page has the terminals and the taxi minimum of €9.45.

It suits you if

You are arriving by train or plane with luggage and want the shortest possible drag from the station to the room. You want a quieter night than the old town's bar streets give, in a district with the same closing hours but fewer bars. Or you are joining a cruise, in which case the terminals are a walk along the quay.

It also suits anyone whose interest is contemporary rather than Moorish: the CAC is free and the Pompidou is ten minutes east.

It does not suit you if

Your budget is the deciding fact, because on the October night we checked Soho listed above every other district, with a median of $163.10 (€140) against $134.00 (€115) in the old town and $89.70 (€77) at La Malagueta. Or if you want the sights at the door, because the barrio's own are two and the rest are across the Alameda. And it does not suit a first-time visitor who expects a bohemian quarter: Soho is a business grid with murals, and the evening is quieter than the name promises.
